Acting Assignment
• An acting assignment is generally authorized when an employee is temporarily
appointed to a higher-level position—for example, a vacancy. Such appointments may
result in a temporary or acting increase. It should be based on the following factors:
✓level of responsibilities assumed
✓assignment of supervisory responsibilities, if applicable
✓salary range of the vacant position
• The acting pay amount should not be made a part of the employee’s base salary.
Rather, a separate allowance should be applied for the acting period.
• An acting pay policy need to be developed to provide special terms and conditions for
acting pay.
