ABSTRACT
This study aims to deploy seismic refraction tomography (SRT) and multichannel analysis of
surface waves (MASW) to investigate the characteristic of dumpsite at Kratie province,
Cambodia. The thickness, layers, lateral and vertical extension of waste were mapped with 2D
of P –and S –wave velocity obtained from SRT and MASW, respectively. Five lines of SRT and
MASW were acquit ion for 5 lines at dumpsite with 24 channel seismograph using 4.5Hz of
geophone. Four lines seismic lines were set up with 5m spacing of each geophone, while
another line was set up with 2.5m spacing; the total length was 120m and 50m , respectively.
The sledgehammer (8kg) was used to generate seismic sources. According the result of Vp
obtained from SRT and Vs obtained from MASW showed the distinguish boundaries between
waste layers and hosted sediment. The waste layers were identified with Vp ranging from 200 500 m/s, while Vs ranging from 90 -220 m/s. The thickness of waste were illustrated on seismic
profiles with the depth from 1 -5m. According to the field observation, the wastes are mainly
municipal waste and mixed with industrial wastes, resulting high velocity anomaly zones.
INTRODUCTION
Dumpsite in Kratie province is the place where the dispose of the domestic and industrial
wastes from the town (Figure 1). Due to the deposed of inhomogeneous wastes that are largely
non-biodegradable and decomposed of organic matter, providing the potential pollution to the
human, animal, and surrounding environment. Currently, this dumpsite is plan to cover with the
standard of safety. To understand the characteristic of dumpsite and subsurface waste are
important. However, it is difficult to use boring or drilling to investigate dumpsite due to the
unconsolidated sediment and waste. Therefore, this study aim to conduct SRT and MASW to
capture the thickness and layer of wastes.

lines indicated the survey of SRT and MASW seismic lines.
OBJECTIVES
The main goal of this study is to investigate the dumpsite using SRT and MASW in Kratie
province. There are two main objectives such as:
- To map the waster layers
- To characterize the thickness of the waste
METHODOLOGY
Figure 3. (A) and (C) are 2D P-wave velocity obtained from SRT survey in the direction NW –SE
and NW –SE. (B) and (D) are 2D S-wave velocity obtained from MASW in the direction NW –SE
and NW –SE.
CONCLUSION
Seismic refraction tomography and multichannel analysis of surface waves were successfully
carried out to investigate the dumpsite in Kratie province. The main findings are: These results
of processing techniques for evaluate of subsurface as waste layer depth 1m and P-wave
velocity (Vp) range (210 m/s to 507 m/s), for the S-wave velocity (Vs) range (92 m/s to 215 m/s)
include product packaging, clothing, glasses, bottles, kitchen garbage, paper, appliances,
batteries, hard solid waste, etc.

RESULT AND INTERPRETATION
Please add the interpretation here…..Ex: For SRT showing the water layer and sediment mixed
waste with velocity ranging from……m/s…. MASW provided the Vs velocity, illustrating the
waste and mixed waste with velocity…m/s. The result of Vp is consistent with those Vs obtained
from MASW…………………….
