FINDING YOUR
WHY
FIND YOUR WHY
Your why is going to come from what matters most to you. Ironically, the things that
matter most are rarely “things", but rather people, feelings and experiences.. Reminding
yourself of why you started (your true, emotional WHY) is going to fuel you if/when
challenges arise on this life changing journey. SO, let's find your why!
Naturally, for me as your trainer, I want to know what motivates you to help encourage
you when you’re finding the diet or training difficult. If you know, or can work out your
true, emotional "why" for starting this journey, it will be a very powerful tool. You can
draw an endless supply of energy from this.
Normally, when I ask "but why do you want to change?", the first response only
scratches the surface, "I want to lose 10kg", "I don’t like my stomach", or "I hate how my
clothes look on me". You get the idea.
10 years of experience has taught me that there is always more, you need to dig al little
deeper. Why do you want to lose 10kg? Why don’t you like your stomach? Why does it
matter that you don't like how your clothes look? What would happen if you did like
how they looked? How would it change your life? Why is that important?
When prompted, people manage to elaborate to things like, "I want to take my T-shirt
off on holiday and not worry about people looking at me", or "I've never been out of
breath when walking up the stairs before", "I can't keep up with my kids!" These are all
valid reasons, and we are almost there.... but not quite.
There is normally one more why. The important one. The emotional why. Now, why do
you want to achieve this goal? This is the most meaningful why and the driving force
for anyone who really wants to achieve their goal. Keep reading....

"I've watched my Dad spiral into ill health. I know my health habits aren't great and I I
don't want to follow in his footsteps."
"The way I feel about my body now is affecting my mental wellbeing. I don't feel proud
of who I've let myself become and I lack the confidence I once had. I am determined to
make this change so that I can feel comfortable in my own skin, feel healthier and live a
happier life."
This WHY means a lot but to get there you need to have an honest look at yourself and
put your ego aside. Even if you think it might sound irrational for other people, the true
why is often related to core values or past experience that not everybody can relate to.
I’d like to let you into my why.
When I was in primary school, I used to be chubby and would be on the receiving end of
comments from guys in school and other kids when I was playing football in my Sunday
League team.
This would always get me down, it affected my confidence, especially as I grew older and
inevitably wanted to be attractive to girls.
At the age of 14, I joined the local community gym, started running for 20 minutes then
lifting weights for the next 90 minutes. Definitely not ‘optimal’ but along with the previous
experiences, it was enough to charge me up and go 6x a week. On the 7th, I played football
in my Sunday league team… By 16 I was ‘normal’, very fit and loved the person I had
become. And that was it. I had become a fit person and I’ve not looked back since.
I hope you can understand how you’re Why can trigger you. I’m sure my story won’t mean
much to you, and that is ok. It doesn’t have too. It was enough to help push me to where I
needed to be.

PUTTING YOUR WHY
INTO PRACTICE
Application is key, and I’d like you to take 10 minutes to think of 5 reasons for the next 3
questions. If you’d like to share with me, I’d love to see them. But if you want to keep
them private, I understand that too. The most important outcome is for you to know
why you’re here.
1. Write down 5 reasons why you train or want to train.
2. Write down 5 things that will happen if you fail.
3. Write down 5 things that will happen if you succeed.
