Each student writes three random words on a piece of paper (e.g., banana, mountain,
robot).
Students pass their paper to the person on their right.
Using one or more of the words, each student writes a short paragraph in any style (story,
description, or explanation).
Students pass the paper again to the next person.
Students read what’s already written and add the next paragraph to continue the idea,
story, or topic.
At the end, invite a few students to share the final piece with the class.
Guided Practice
- Students will evaluate the piece of writing they received in terms of cohesion, coherence,
mechanics (grammar, spelling, punctuation), and overall clarity.
- Students will present their evaluation to the class or in small groups and share constructive
feedback on how the writing could be improved.
Independent Practice/Evaluation
- Learners complete the Workbook activity for this session.
Closure/Checking for Understanding
- Give quick feedback on creativity, coherence, and use of the words.
- Wrap up by asking students what they enjoyed or found challenging about continuing
someone else’s writing.
Topic 2: Travel Journal (July 18, 2025)
Opening:
- The class start by showing students a mindmap and asking them the purpose of mindmapping
- Explain that a mindmap can help understand concepts by breaking them down into parts
Main Activities:
-
Tell students they will work in pairs to create a mind map with ‘Island’ as the main topic. Ask
them to imagine being on an island and think of words and ideas connected to it.
-
In pairs, students jot down words and ideas that are associated with the word Island to build
their mind map.
-
Once they finish, ask some pairs to share their mind map and explain the sub-topics they
added under Island.
-
Ask: “If you were to write a description for a guidebook about an island, how would your mind
map help you? Which sub-topic would you put first in your first paragraph?”
Guided Practice
- Explain that students will now read a passage about an island called Tenerife in their
Coursebook (page 3).
- Students read the passage and identify the topic of each paragraph.

Ask them to compare and contrast the paragraph topics with the sub-topics they wrote in
their mind map.
Then, students answer the questions on page 6.
Discuss the answers together and explain that understanding paragraph topics helps them
find specific information and answer comprehension questions more easily.
Independent Practice/Evaluation
- Learners complete the Workbook activity for this session.
Closure/Checking for Understanding
- Review the main paragraph topics from the Tenerife passage as a class and check if
everyone agrees on the key ideas.
-
Ask students: “How does knowing the topic of each paragraph help you answer detailed
questions?”
