a) A slack Variable represents an unused amount of a resource. It allows us to change the
inequalities in the constraint equations to equalities which are easy to solve algebraically.
b) Water and Labour
c) To increase slack of water by 1m3, the amount of soya must be decreased by 0.025
d) R125
e) Less land is required in iteration 1 because Soya is now using the surplus land , while
maize now uses 0.75 ha of land
f) Hectares of maize and soya to be planted for max Profit : Maize= 0 ha, Soya= 150ha
Max profit= R750000
Resource use to Max Profits:
Land=150 ha
Water=6000m3
Labour=450 h
g) Objective function: 3000M + 5000S = MAX Z
Constraints:
M + S <= 250
10M + 40S <= 6000
2M + 3S <= 540
M >=0, S >= 0
H)
