The Internet has
made it easier for
people to be
information
illiterate in new
ways
Anyone can now create
information, regardless of
its quality, and present it
in front of large numbers of
people.
The ability of social media
to spread information as
quickly as possible, and to
as many people as possible,
challenges literacy, as does
the ability to manipulate
images, sounds, and videos
with ease.
FAKE NEWS
The concept of "fake news" became
a hot topic during the 2016 US
election, when news with little
or no basis spread rapidly on
social media, causing some
concern about its potential
influence on the democratic
process.
But the existence of "fake news"
is not something new.
"Disinformation wars" already
existed in ancient Rome.

If it seems very complicated
to fight fake news, it is
probably even more complicated
to do so with fake videos that
show people like politicians
or stars saying or doing
things that have never
happened. Therefore there is a
huge concern about how this
use can be regulated in social
media
Dictionary.com announced
that its 2018 word of the
year was "misinformation“
Just a year before that,
the Orford Dictionary
named its word of the
year "Toxic"
Disinformation comes in
many forms
• Purposefully falsifying
information or distorting the
news
• Presenting opinions as facts
• Based on disproven conspiracy
theories
• Unverified credit trafficking
• State-sponsored propaganda}
• Promoting racism, misogyny, or
homophobia
• Using exaggerated or misleading
headlines or images as
"clickbait"
