Chapter I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Ergonomics plays a crucial role in enhancing the functionality and comfort of small household spaces. By optimizing the design of furniture and workspaces, ergonomics ensures that every inch of a limited area is utilized efficiently, thereby maximizing usability and comfort. Proper ergonomic design reduces the risk of physical strain and injuries, which are common in cramped and poorly designed spaces. Additionally, ergonomically designed furniture can improve the overall aesthetic and ambiance of a household, creating a more pleasant and productive living environment. In small spaces, where every piece of furniture must serve a purpose without overwhelming the room, the principles of ergonomics are indispensable for creating a harmonious balance between utility and comfort. Introduction Across the globe, small living spaces increasingly challenge the functionality and comfort of households, particularly in urban environments. The rise in compact living, driven by urbanization, often results in cramped and cluttered homes. While design innovations like multifunctional furniture and vertical storage solutions offer some relief, they frequently fall short in addressing the needs of medium-sized families, leading to restricted movement and limited personal space. This lack of space can cause physical discomfort due to awkward postures and limited mobility, along with psychological stress from living in confined areas (Smith, 2021). In medium-sized families, the strain of small living spaces intensifies as individuals must share limited resources. Children often lack proper study areas, leading to poor posture and concentration issues, while adults struggle with inadequate home office setups, reducing productivity and increasing fatigue. The need to constantly navigate around furniture and household items can lead to frustration and accidents, highlighting the necessity of ergonomic design to improve comfort and functionality in these environments (Johnson, 2020). In Southeast Asia, low-cost housing frequently features compact, multipurpose spaces designed for efficiency rather than comfort. Despite attempts to maximize space with open floor plans and multifunctional furniture, the limited square footage often results in cluttered and cramped living conditions, particularly for larger families. This environment negatively impacts daily activities and overall well-being, as residents must constantly adjust to the lack of space (Lee, 2022). To cope with these constraints, Southeast Asian households often resort to temporary and makeshift solutions like vertical storage, under-bed compartments, and hanging racks. However, these methods often fail to create a functional or visually appealing environment, leading to a sense of disorder and inefficiency in daily routines. The necessity to use every available space for storage further exacerbates the cluttered appearance, undermining the potential for a harmonious living space (Tan, 2021). The aesthetics of low-cost housing in Southeast Asia are frequently compromised by the need to accommodate numerous personal belongings in a confined area. The over-reliance on makeshift storage leads to visually chaotic interiors, detracting from any attempts to create a cohesive design. This clutter not only reduces the visual appeal of homes but also contributes to increased stress and discomfort for residents. The lack of proper storage planning often results in a disorganized and cramped living environment, underscoring the urgent need for ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing solutions tailored to small spaces (Nguyen, 2023). In the Philippines, small living spaces pose significant challenges, affecting both physical well-being and daily functionality. Limited storage, inadequate personal space, and difficulties in maintaining an organized environment are common issues. The lack of ergonomic design in furniture forces residents into awkward postures during daily tasks, leading to musculoskeletal problems and discomfort. For instance, working from home in a small space often results in physical strain due to inadequate furniture, such as chairs lacking lumbar support or improperly sized tables. This issue is compounded by the high costs associated with purchasing additional furniture to meet the needs of small spaces, further straining household budgets. One often-overlooked risk in small living spaces is the potential hazard associated with everyday activities, such as charging a cellphone. Overused outlets and precariously placed charging devices increase the risk of electrical fires and accidents. The cluttered environment in these spaces can obstruct safe exit routes during emergencies, making routine tasks potentially dangerous. Investing in additional charging stations and storage solutions to ensure safety and organization adds to the overall cost of maintaining a functional living space. To manage limited space, many Filipinos use temporary storage solutions, such as foldable furniture and multi-purpose items like sofa beds and storage ottomans. However, achieving a balance between functionality and aesthetics remains a challenge. Some households adopt a minimalist lifestyle to reduce clutter, but this often conflicts with the need to keep essential items secure and accessible. Common storage solutions like plastic bins, under-bed storage, and wall-mounted shelves are used to organize belongings, but they often compromise the visual appeal of the home. Security is another major concern in small living spaces, especially regarding valuable items like money, jewelry, and important documents. The lack of space often forces residents to store valuables in easily accessible areas, increasing the risk of theft. Portable lockboxes and safes offer some level of security but require space and can be cumbersome. This dilemma of balancing accessibility and security is particularly challenging in small homes. Filipinos prefer dim lighting during sleep to create a calming environment, adding another layer of complexity to space management. The trend of working from home has intensified the need for ergonomic solutions that address both spatial and functional demands, further increasing the financial burden on households. Despite these challenges, many Filipino families manage to create a balance between functionality and aesthetics through creative, cost-effective solutions. Modular furniture, vertical gardens, and wall-mounted decorations are popular for adding aesthetic value without consuming floor space. However, achieving this balance requires careful planning and investment, underscoring the importance of ergonomic design in enhancing the quality of life in small spaces. As households continue to encounter the challenges of limited space and functionality, this study aims to address these issues by developing a multipurpose vanity table. The proposed design offers a comprehensive solution to the ergonomic and functional problems common in small living environments. By integrating advanced security features, convenient charging capabilities, adjustable lighting, ample storage, and flexible sizing, this vanity table is designed to significantly improve the quality of life for its users, ensuring a harmonious blend of convenience, comfort, and peace of mind.. Theoretical Framework The increasing trend of urbanization and the consequent rise in compact living spaces have highlighted the need for multifunctional furniture that maximizes utility without compromising on comfort and aesthetics. This study aims to address these challenges by designing and developing a multipurpose vanity table that integrates several essential features, including biometric security, adjustable lighting, and flexible workspace options. By focusing on ergonomic principles, the table seeks to enhance user comfort, safety, and efficiency, particularly in small households where space is at a premium. The proposed design will not only meet the practical needs of users but also maintain a clean and streamlined appearance, contributing to a more organized and aesthetically pleasing living environment. The best theoretical framework for this study is Ergonomics and Human Factors Theory. This framework focuses directly on designing products that fit the needs of users, enhancing comfort, efficiency, and safety. Given the primary goal of the study is to design a multipurpose vanity table that addresses various ergonomic challenges in small living spaces, this framework provides the most relevant and practical guidance. Ergonomics is centered on the interaction between people and the products they use, with the primary aim of improving usability, comfort, and safety. This is particularly important in the context of a multipurpose vanity table, which must accommodate various tasks and user needs while fitting into a small space. By focusing on the ergonomic aspects of design, this study seeks to create a vanity table that seamlessly integrates into small living spaces, providing maximum functionality without compromising user well-being. The study will apply ergonomic principles to various aspects of the vanity table's design. The table's height, lighting, and storage solutions will be meticulously designed to prevent physical strain and improve user comfort. Adjustable height settings will accommodate users of different statures, ensuring that the table can be used comfortably whether sitting or standing. Lighting will be integrated to provide optimal illumination for various tasks, reducing eye strain and enhancing visibility. Incorporating adjustable features, such as table size and lighting, will cater to different user preferences and tasks. The ability to retract or expand the table will provide flexibility for various activities, such as makeup application, studying, or working. Adjustable lighting with customizable brightness and color temperature will allow users to create the perfect ambiance for their needs. The design will focus on creating an intuitive and user-friendly interface for technological features like biometric security and charging stations. This includes easy-to-access controls for adjusting the table and lighting settings, as well as secure and convenient charging solutions for both wired and wireless devices. The biometric security system will ensure that personal items and valuables are kept safe, providing peace of mind for users. Ensuring the design minimizes risks associated with cramped spaces, such as electrical hazards from charging stations, is crucial. The table will include safety features such as rounded edges to prevent injuries, non-slip surfaces to avoid accidents, and well-organized cable management to reduce clutter and prevent electrical hazards. These safety measures will make the vanity table not only functional but also secure for everyday use. By focusing on ergonomics and human factors, the study will develop a multipurpose vanity table that not only meets functional requirements but also enhances the overall well-being and efficiency of users in small living spaces. The application of ergonomic principles will ensure that the table supports healthy postures, minimizes physical strain, and provides a versatile and user-friendly solution for a variety of activities. The outputs of this framework are aimed at enhancing the user experience by improving the quality of life, ensuring user satisfaction, and achieving market viability. By following this structured methodology, the study aims to develop a multifunctional vanity table that not only addresses ergonomic and functional challenges in small living spaces but also provides a visually appealing and commercially viable product. Statement of the Problem The increasing urbanization and the consequent rise in compact living spaces have created a significant demand for multifunctional furniture that maximizes utility without compromising comfort and aesthetics. Traditional furniture designs often fail to address the ergonomic and functional needs of users in small households, leading to physical discomfort, inefficient space utilization, and cluttered living environments. Moreover, the integration of advanced features such as biometric security, adjustable lighting, and versatile storage solutions in compact furniture remains a challenge. This study aims to design and develop a multipurpose vanity table that addresses these issues by incorporating ergonomic principles and user-centered design features. The primary problems to be addressed in this study are: 1. Who demographic profiles who might need this furniture in terms of: a. Role in the Household (if Decision Maker in purchasing) b. Gender c. Age d. Occupaton 2. What is the current condition of vanity tables used by household relative to the design, size and functionality? 3. What issues and challenges are encountered by household in using the existing vanity table? 4. What ergonomic design intervention can be proposed to address the issues of using the vanity tables? Scope, Limitations and Delimitations This study focuses on the design and development of a multipurpose vanity table specifically tailored for small living spaces. It aims to identify the demographic profile of potential users, including their role in the household, gender, age, and occupation, to better understand their needs. The study will examine the current condition of existing vanity tables in terms of design, size, and functionality. It will also analyze the issues and challenges users face when using these tables and propose ergonomic design interventions to address the identified problems. The proposed table will incorporate user-centered features such as adjustable height, integrated lighting, versatile storage solutions, and advanced functionalities like biometric security and charging stations to enhance comfort, safety, and efficiency. This study excludes large furniture designs and those intended for commercial spaces, as the focus is strictly on compact, multifunctional furniture for small households. It does not conduct an extensive market analysis or a costbenefit study for mass production, as the scope is limited to the design and user testing phases. Cultural or region-specific user preferences are also not considered since user testing will involve a small and manageable group of participants. Additionally, the study limits the integration of technologies to biometric security, wired/wireless charging, and LED lighting to maintain focus on essential functionalities that directly address user needs. These exclusions ensure that the study remains focused, realistic, and aligned with its primary objectives. The study has several perceived limitations. First, the sample size and diversity of participants for the user testing phase may be limited, which could affect the generalizability of the findings. Second, resource constraints, such as time, budget, and materials, may restrict the integration of high-quality materials and advanced features. Third, implementing technologies like biometric security and wireless charging may pose technical challenges, requiring specialized testing to ensure reliability and functionality. Furthermore, the study acknowledges that user preferences and market standards may vary across regions, potentially affecting the broader acceptance of the product. Lastly, while the design focuses on adjustability and technological components, ensuring their long-term durability and ease of maintenance may not be fully addressed within the study period. By acknowledging these limitations, the study aims to provide a practical and wellgrounded approach to creating a multipurpose vanity table that enhances the quality of life for users in compact living spaces. Chapter III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The research methodology for this study outlines the systematic approach used to design and develop a multipurpose vanity table tailored for small living spaces. It encompasses various stages, including initial needs assessment, design conceptualization, prototyping, and user testing. The methodology integrates both qualitative and quantitative research methods to ensure a comprehensive understanding of user requirements and design efficacy. Emphasizing user-centered design principles, the study aims to create a product that not only meets functional and aesthetic needs but also enhances user comfort and safety. Through iterative testing and refinement, the research seeks to produce a final design that is both innovative and practical for everyday use. Research Design The research design for this study utilizes a mixed methods approach to develop and evaluate a multipurpose vanity table tailored for small living spaces, integrating ergonomic and technological features. Mixed methods research combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to provide a comprehensive analysis of the subject (Dela Cruz, 2021). Guided by Ergonomics and Human Factors Theory, the study aims to enhance user comfort, efficiency, and safety through a user-centered approach. The design process follows the Input-ProcessOutput (IPO) model to ensure a systematic methodology. Initially, qualitative methods, such as semi-structured interviews and focus groups, will gather in-depth insights into user needs, preferences, and experiences. This qualitative data will be complemented by quantitative methods, including surveys and ergonomic assessments, to provide measurable data on the effectiveness of the design features. The initial phase involves a needs assessment to identify specific user requirements, forming the basis for the design specifications. In the design conceptualization phase, multiple prototypes will be created using brainstorming sessions, sketching, and computer-aided design (CAD) software, incorporating ergonomic principles and advanced features like biometric security, wireless charging stations, LED lighting, and adjustable components. Subject of the Study The subject of this study will be individuals who live in small living spaces and need multifunctional furniture that enhances comfort, efficiency, and usability. These individuals include urban dwellers, such as apartment residents and those in densely populated cities, where maximizing space utility is essential. The study targets a diverse demographic, encompassing various age groups and lifestyles, to ensure the design of the multipurpose vanity table meets a wide range of user needs and preferences. Informed by the Ergonomics and Human Factors Theory, the study aims to address the ergonomic challenges and functional requirements identified in the statement of the problem. The needs assessment phase will involve participants who can provide insights into their daily routines, preferences, and the specific limitations they face in compact living environments. By focusing on these subjects, the research aims to develop a product that not only enhances the overall quality of life for users in small spaces but also addresses the identified scope and limitations, such as the integration of advanced features and ensuring safety and ergonomic efficiency. Through iterative testing and user feedback, the study seeks to create a versatile and innovative vanity table that caters to the unique needs of individuals living in constrained spaces. Data Gathering Instrument The data gathering instruments for this study will include semi-structured interviews, focus groups, surveys, and ergonomic assessments to comprehensively capture user needs, preferences, and feedback on the design of the multipurpose vanity table. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups will provide qualitative insights into the specific challenges and requirements faced by individuals living in small spaces, aligning with the study's user-centered approach informed by the Ergonomics and Human Factors Theory. These methods will allow for in-depth discussions about daily routines, preferences, and the limitations users encounter with current furniture options. Surveys will be employed to collect quantitative data on user preferences and the demand for various features, ensuring a broad understanding of user needs across a larger sample. Ergonomic assessments will be conducted to evaluate the physical comfort and usability of the design prototypes, focusing on key ergonomic principles to minimize physical strain and enhance user comfort. These assessments will involve participants interacting with the prototypes in controlled settings, providing measurable data on the effectiveness of the design features. By combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, the study aims to ensure a comprehensive understanding of user requirements, addressing the scope and limitations identified in the statement of the problem, and ultimately refining the design to meet functional, aesthetic, and ergonomic standards. Data Gathering Procedures The data gathering procedures for this study will begin with a comprehensive needs assessment phase, which includes semi-structured interviews, surveys, and Gemba walks. Initially, semi-structured interviews will be conducted with selected participants who live in small spaces to explore their daily routines, furniture usage, and ergonomic challenges. These interviews will be complemented by Gemba walks, where researchers will visit participants' homes to observe their living conditions and interactions with existing furniture in realtime. This direct observation will provide valuable contextual insights into the practical challenges faced by residents in small spaces. The sessions will be recorded and transcribed to capture detailed insights, which will then be analyzed to identify recurring themes that will inform the design specifications of the multipurpose vanity table. Following the qualitative phase, a survey will be developed based on the findings from the interviews and Gemba walks. This survey will be distributed electronically to a larger and more diverse sample of individuals living in small spaces, utilizing online tools like Google Forms or SurveyMonkey. The survey responses will be collected and subjected to statistical analysis to quantify the demand for various features and to pinpoint critical ergonomic needs. In the design conceptualization phase, the data gathered from the needs assessment will guide the creation of initial design prototypes using computeraided design (CAD) software. These prototypes will integrate key features identified in the earlier phase, such as biometric security, adjustable components, and other ergonomic enhancements. The prototypes will then undergo iterative testing, where selected participants from the needs assessment phase will interact with the physical models in controlled environments. During these usability testing sessions, participants’ interactions with the prototypes will be closely observed and recorded, focusing on usability, ease of use, and ergonomic fit. Following each interaction, post-interaction feedback will be collected through interviews and usability questionnaires to identify design flaws and areas for improvement. Additionally, ergonomic assessments will be conducted as an integral part of the testing phase. Participants will be asked to perform typical tasks using the vanity table prototypes while ergonomic experts assess key factors such as posture, reach, and ease of use. This will provide quantitative data on the effectiveness of the design features in minimizing physical strain and enhancing comfort. The data collected throughout these procedures will be systematically analyzed to refine and validate the design, ensuring that the final product meets the ergonomic, functional, and aesthetic requirements of users in small living spaces. Statistical Treatment of Data The statistical treatment of data in this study is meticulously designed to rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of the multipurpose vanity table in meeting the ergonomic, functional, and aesthetic needs of users in small living spaces. This approach is grounded in the principles of Ergonomics and Human Factors Theory and follows the Input-Process-Output (IPO) model, ensuring that both qualitative and quantitative data are systematically analyzed. This comprehensive analysis will directly address the research objectives and the statement of the problem, providing robust evidence to support the design's effectiveness. Survey Data - Descriptive statistics will be employed to summarize the responses from the survey, which aims to quantify user preferences and the demand for various features of the vanity table. Measures such as mean, median, mode, and standard deviation will be calculated to provide a clear understanding of central tendencies and dispersion in the data. This will help identify the most preferred features and common user requirements. Frequency Distributions- Frequency distributions will be used to analyze the categorical data collected from the survey. This will involve counting the occurrences of each response option to determine the popularity of specific features and design elements. Bar charts and pie charts will be utilized to visually represent these distributions, making it easier to interpret and compare the results. Inferential Statistics T-tests and ANOVA- To determine the statistical significance of differences between various design iterations, t-tests and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) will be conducted. For instance, ergonomic assessments might yield data on task completion times, physical strain, and comfort levels for different prototypes. These tests will help identify whether observed differences are statistically significant, thereby validating the improvements made during the iterative design process. Correlation Analysis - Correlation analysis will be performed to explore relationships between different variables, such as the relationship between user satisfaction scores and specific ergonomic features. Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficients will be calculated to quantify the strength and direction of these relationships. This analysis will help understand how different design aspects influence overall user satisfaction. Ethical Consideration The ethical considerations of this study are paramount, ensuring that the research is conducted with integrity, respect, and responsibility towards all participants. In alignment with the Ergonomics and Human Factors Theory and the user-centered approach emphasized in the study's framework, the research will prioritize obtaining informed consent from all participants. Participants will be fully informed about the study's objectives, procedures, potential risks, and benefits, allowing them to make an informed decision about their involvement. Privacy and confidentiality will be strictly maintained, with all data anonymized to protect participants' identities. This is particularly important given the personal nature of the feedback and ergonomic assessments that will be collected. Additionally, the study will adhere to the principle of non-maleficence, ensuring that no harm comes to participants during the testing of prototypes.
