In ‘A Brief History of Time’, Stephen Hawking tried to explain the nature of our universe
from the smallest particles to the biggest entities. The chapters in this book are laid out on
topics as the nature of space and time, the expanding universe, Heisenberg’s Uncertainty
Principle, quarks and other elementary particles, black holes, the beginning and potential end
of the universe, time and how it works.

On the very onset Hawking tries to influence the conventional idea about space and
time. Referring to Einstein’s theory of relativity, he explains that space and time are blended
onto each other rather than being separate entities.

Then he explores the discovery that the universe is not static but expanding. He
discusses different models of the universe’s expansion and speculates on its possible fates.
This sets the framework for understanding the origin and evolution of the cosmos.

Thereafter, Hawking introduces quantum mechanics and Heisenberg’s Uncertainty
Principle, which states that we cannot simultaneously know a particle’s exact position and
velocity.

After that, Hawking delves into the fundamental building blocks of matter like quarks,
electrons, and photons.

He narrates the nature and physics of a ‘‘Black Hole’’ which was thought to be science
fiction. He argues that black holes are to exist to make the physical equations right. He also
goes deep into the nature of ‘‘Black Hole’’ and says they are objects with infinite density which
is very similar to the singularity at the moment of creation.

Then Hawking presents one of his most famous contributions known as ‘Hawking
Radiation’. This idea suggests that black holes can slowly lose mass and eventually
evaporate.

One of the most interesting parts of this book is that, with the existing laws of physics
Hawking tries to predict the beginning and end of the universe. He finds that universe was
very tiny with infinite density and burst out to existence with a gigantic explosion termed as
“The Big Bang”. He proposes that without violating the existing laws of physics the universe
may be heading for three possible destinies; namely, The Big Crunch (Universe will reverse
the expanding motion and contract to singularity), The Big Rip (Universe will keep expanding
and disintegrate in about 30 billon years) and Big Bounce (Big Crunch followed by another
Big Bang over and over).

Finally, he tries to give the reader some idea about the fourth dimension of the universe
“Time”. He argues that time has three distinctive arrows and all of them points to the same
direction to make sense. He used an interesting terminology of “Imaginary Time” and shows
how the insane idea of time travel may turn to be a science fact someday.

He ends the book with more questions than he tried to solve in his book. The biggest
answer he advocates the next generations to find is a complete unified theory of physics
which will explain everything across the universe. He mentions that this endless quest for
answers will enable human race to find the very edge of the universe someday.
