ears tingle.
Suddenly, a loud snap, like a twig breaking under a heavy foot, ripped through the usual
jungle sounds. Maya froze, her heart thumping against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her eyes
darted around, trying to see through the hanging vines and shadowy bushes. She tasted the
metallic tang of fear in her mouth. Was it just a monkey, or something bigger, something
dangerous, moving closer in the dense, green world around her? The feeling of being watched
was strong, a shiver running down her spine. The silence that followed the snap was even
