Teacher/s Activity
Routinary Activities (5 minutes)
a. Prayer
Let us start our class with a prayer, let us all
stand.
Student/s Activity
Prayer will be recorded
b. Greetings
Good morning STEM Grade 11.
How are you today?
Awesome, I hope you will enjoy our new lesson
for today.
c. Checking of attendance
Is there anyone who is absent today?
Good morning ma’am, it nice to see you
today
We are doing good ma’am
None teacher.
Very good that everyone is present today. I hope
you will keep it up.
Reviewing the previous lesson
(ELICIT- 3-5 minutes only)
Before we start, I wanted to make sure that you
understand our previous topic which is about
Photosynthesis.
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is a process of food making
in the leaves of plant.
Absolutely, Photosynthesis is a process wherein plants
are making their food. What do you call the organisms
who can produce their own food?
Autotrophs or Producer
Who can still remember the equation of
Photosynthesis?
CO2 + H2O = C6H12O6 + O2
Which part of plant did the photosynthesis happen?
leaves
Very Good, I am now convinced that you already know
the previous topic that we had.
Establishing a purpose for the lesson
(ENGAGE -5 minutes)
Before we proceed on the next lesson, we will do an
activity for you to have an idea on our next topic. Are
you ready?
I will group you into 4, This will be the group 1, group 2
group 3 and group 4. Now, listen to the directions.
Direction: With the materials given, solve the jigsaw
puzzle to identify the picture hidden. Once done, post
the picture on the board.
Yes, we are!

the jigsaw puzzle to identify the picture
hidden. Once done, post the picture on the
board.
Group 1- Green
leaves
Group 2Orange leaves
Group 3Yellow leaves
Group 4- Red
leaves
Let’s check if your answers are correct.
Kindly post your outputs on the board.
Amazing! You did it well. With that Let’s give
yourselves.
What have you noticed on the pictures on board?
Why do you think leaves varies in color? Do you have
any idea?
We will answer that question later since our lesson for
today is all about plant pigments.
For our new lesson here is our objectives, kindly read
The learners are expected to:
1. Identify the major types of plant pigments and
its function;
2. Demonstrate the plant pigments through
chromatography; and
3. Relate the importance Chlorophyll and plant
pigments to the human body.
Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills
(EXPLORE-10 minutes)
Before we start our lesson, we will do chromatography
experiment.
(Group activity)
Plant chromatography!
Let us have 4 groups, I’ll assign members of each
group.
As you can see on the table of each group, there are
materials that you will use on our activity. The
Different color of leaves.
instructions that you need to follow is at the paper on
the table.
You may proceed on the respective groups.
(Students will proceed in their groups.)
General Direction: Choose a leader,
presenter and a secretary within your group.
Follow instructions as indicated on the
paper. Each group will be given 10 minutes
to conduct the activity and to finalized the
groups’ observation. The presenter will have
2 minutes to share their observation with
the class.
GROUP 1
Materials:
Isopropyl alcohol
Green color leaves
Clear cup
Filter paper
Procedure
Cut the leaves into small pieces.
Put Isopropyl alcohol in the cup
together with small pieces leaves
Stir, until the color will appear to the
mixture.
Cut the filter paper lengthwise (2cm
width).
Set filter paper to the mixture
vertically and observe.
Take note of the color that will
appear.
GROUP 2
Materials:
Isopropyl alcohol
Yellow color leaves
Clear cup
Filter paper
Procedure
Cut the leaves into small pieces.
Put Isopropyl alcohol in the cup
together with small pieces leaves
Stir, until the color will appear to the
mixture.
Cut the filter paper lengthwise (2cm
width).
Set filter paper to the mixture
vertically and observe.
Take note of the color that will
appear.
GROUP 3
Materials:
Isopropyl alcohol
Orange color leaves
Clear cup
Filter paper
Procedure
Cut the leaves into small pieces.
Put Isopropyl alcohol in the cup
together with small pieces leaves
Stir, until the color will appear to the
mixture.

vertically and observe.
Take note of the color that will
appear.
GROUP 4
Materials:
Isopropyl alcohol
Red color leaves
Clear cup
Filter paper
Procedure
Cut the leaves into small pieces.
Put Isopropyl alcohol in the cup
together with small pieces leaves
Stir, until the color will appear to the
mixture.
Cut the filter paper lengthwise (2cm
width).
Set filter paper to the mixture
vertically and observe.
Take note of the color that will
appear.
Are you done? The presenter of each group may
proceed here in front to share your observation to us.
Each group will present their observation.
Very good, thank you to all presenter.
Based on our activity, even if the leaves appear as green
there are other pigments that appear as a result of our
chromatography.
With that, let us identify those pigments and its
function on plant leaves based on what you observed on
our activity.
Developing mastery leads to Assessment
(EXPLAIN -5 minutes)
Before we discuss the chloroplast and other plant
pigments, let us watch this video.
Plant Pigment-It is a substance in a plant that
imparts coloration. There are both photosynthetic and
non-photosynthetic pigments in plants.
Different category of Plant pigments
Thylakoid
Grana
Inner and outer phospholipids
stroma
Chlorophyll- Pigment that cause the green colors in
plants. Chlorophyll absorbs energy from light, plants
use this energy to convert carbon dioxide and water
into carbohydrates and oxygen.
chloroplast is the site of Photosynthesis
which contain pigments that cause the color
of the leaves.
There are 4 types of chlorophyll
-Chlorophyll a
-Chlorophyll b
-Chlorophyll c
-Chlorophyll d
Carotenoids- it produces yellow, orange, and red
colors in plants. A common carotenoid is beta-carotene,
which is produced in chromoplasts of sunflower petals.
It is also responsible for the orange color in carrots and
sweet potatoes.
-Accessory light-harvesting pigment.
Type of carotenoids
-Carotene-xanthophyll- oxygen content
Anthocyanins- reflect Red or purple light waves. It
produced when chlorophyll starts to break down in the
fall.
Betalains-These natural food colors are used as an
alternative to red synthetic dyes in candies, dairy
products, jelly beans, and non-alcoholic beverages.
These plant pigments have effect on us, human.
Before we tackle that, do you have any clarifications on
the main plant pigments?
Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in
daily living
(ELABORATE -10 minutes)
If you don’t have any questions. Let us move on to the
next activity, this will be an individual activity.
Do you agree that chlorophyll is essential to the plant’s
food making which is photosynthesis?
Now, answer this question “How chlorophyll is
important to you as a student/ person?”
Teacher will choose 3 students to share their answers.
Thank you for sharing your answer to us, let us give
them a round of applause.
Yes, ma’am
“How chlorophyll important to you as a
student/ person?”
Instruction: You will be given 3 minutes to
think. Write you answer on a ¼ sheet of
paper and you will share your answer to the
class.
I think you already understand our lesson about
chlorophyll and other pigments and I believe that you
already know the importance of chlorophyll to the
plants and to you as a person.
Do you have any questions?
None, ma’am
If none, let us check your knowledge about our lesson
for today.
EVALUATE
Let’s have a short quiz about the lesson that we have
