Area-Specific Strategies:
What are the best strategies in my region
and industry for the following:
Record your answers from your Area-Specific Contact
below:
Make contacts and network with people?
The best strategies for networking and making contacts
with people is by finding recruitment events,
conferences, exhibitions, and workshops and fostering
meaningful non-job-related relationships. This helps
build a contact person’s confidence in you before they
can refer you to a potential employer.
What are the top two digital profile or
ePortfolio sites to use in my region and
industry?
Facebook and LinkedIn are quite popular as they
provide reliability and credibility in information when a
company is looking for an individual to employ or when
an individual is looking for a job. The two digital profiles
help keep track of an individual and their activities.
Find job opportunities and apply for jobs?
The best strategies include networking with people
already employed in the industry or company of interest,
sending applications online and in person applications.
Format and polish my résumé/CV and
supporting communications?
Using applications like Vmock and Hloom that help to
assess whether a resume is fit for the desired job, also
getting an employers feedback on whether or not my
resume is outstanding.
Get an interview and interview well?
People with outstanding resumes and digital portfolios
get the most interviews. A good personality ad
confidence when presenting something also helps in
getting interviews.
Use appropriate professional attire when
contacting, networking or interviewing?
Professional attire when contacting suggests
seriousness and credibility. Employers usually start
envisioning you in a role at their company the moment
they see you and if your dressing suggests that you are
a suitable candidate for the job, you stand a better
chance of getting an interview or a job.
Communicate with my current employer?
●
●
●
When should I let them know I am
applying to other jobs, or should I
at all?
When should I let them know that I
have a job offer, or should I?
How many weeks of notice should I
give my current employer before I
leave their employ?
●
●
●
3 months is a convenient time frame to let an
employer know that you are looking for a job as
it gives them time to advertise a potential job
vacancy and look for a replacement.
3 weeks to a month is convenient to let an
employer know when one has a job offer and
when the job offer falls through to let them know
immediately. This gives them time to find a
replacement especially if you are considering
taking the job.
I should give my employer at least 2 weeks’
notice before I leave for a new job. This provides
adequate time for me to organize things before
the next person takes over.
