Interrogative= 1 No Clause Mood Type 1 My fellow Americans, please, if you have a seat +Dec1 2 take it. +Imp1 3 I speak to you tonight from sacred ground in America: +Dec2 Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 4 This is [[where America made its Declaration of Independence +Dec3 to the world more than two centuries ago with an idea, unique among nations]], 5 that in America, we’re all created equal. +Dec4 6 This is [[where the United States Constitution was written and +Dec5 debated]]. 7 This is where we set in motion the most extraordinary +Dec6 experiment of self-government the world has ever known with three simple words: 8 “We, the People.” “We, the People.” 9 These two documents and the ideas [[they embody]] — equality +Dec7 and democracy — are the rock upon which this nation is built. 10 They are [[how we became the greatest nation on Earth]]. +Dec8 11 They are [[why, for more than two centuries, America has been +Dec9 a beacon to the world]]. 12 But as I stand here tonight, +Dec10 13 equality and democracy are under assault. +Dec11 14 We do ourselves no favor to pretend otherwise. +Dec12 15 So tonight, I have come this place [[[where it all began to speak +Dec13 as plainly as I can to the nation about the threats || we face, about the power || we have in our hands to meet these threats, and about the incredible future || that lies in front of us]]] 16 if only we choose it. +Dec14 17 We must never forget: +Dec15 18 We, the people, are the true heirs of the American experiment +Dec16 [[that began more than two centuries ago]]. 19 We, the people, have burning inside each of us the flame of +Dec17 liberty [[that was lit here at Independence Hall]] — a flame that lit our way through abolition, the Civil War, Suffrage, the Great Depression, world wars, Civil Rights. 20 That sacred flames still burns now in our time +Dec18 21 as we build an America [[that is more prosperous, free, and +Dec19 just]]. 22 That is the work of my presidency, +Dec20 23 a mission I believe in with my whole soul. +Dec21 24 But first, we must be honest with each other and with +Dec22 ourselves. 25 Too much of what’s happening in our country today is not normal. -Dec1 26 Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an +Dec23 extremism [[that threatens the very foundations of our republic]]. 27 Now, I want to be very clear — (applause) — very clear up +Dec24 front: 28 Not every Republican, not even the majority of Republicans, +Dec25 are MAGA Republicans. 29 Not every Republican embraces their extreme ideology. +Dec26 30 I know +Dec27 31 because I’ve been able to work with these mainstream +Dec28 Republicans. 32 But there is no question [[that the Republican Party today is +Dec29 dominated, driven, and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans]], 33 and that is a threat to this country. +Dec30 34 These are hard things. +Dec31 35 But I’m an American President — not the President of red +Dec32 America or blue America, but of all America. 36 And I believe +Dec33 37 it is my duty — my duty to level with you, to tell the truth no +Dec34 matter how difficult, no matter how painful. 38 And here, in my view, is what is true. +Dec35 39 MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution. -Dec2 40 They do not believe in the rule of law. -Dec3 41 They do not recognize the will of the people. -Dec4 42 They refuse to accept the results of a free election. +Dec36 43 And they’re working right now, +Dec37 44 as I speak, in state after state to give power to decide elections +Dec38 in America to partisans and cronies, empowering election deniers to undermine democracy itself. 45 MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards +Dec39 — backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love. 46 They promote authoritarian leaders, +Dec40 47 and they fan the flames of political violence [[that are a threat +Dec41 to our personal rights, to the pursuit of justice, to the rule of law, to the very soul of this country]]. 48 They look at the mob [[that stormed the United States Capitol +Dec42 on January 6th — brutally attacking law enforcement — not as insurrectionists who placed a dagger to the throat of our democracy]], 49 but they look at them as patriots. +Dec43 50 And they see their MAGA failure to stop a peaceful transfer of +Dec44 power after the 2020 election as preparation for the 2022 and 2024 elections. 51 They tried everything last time to nullify the votes of 81 million +Dec45 people. 52 This time, they’re determined to succeed in thwarting the will of the people. +Dec46 53 That’s [[why respected conservatives, like Federal Circuit +Dec47 Court Judge Michael Luttig, has called Trump and the extreme MAGA Republicans, quote, a “clear and present danger” to our democracy]]. 54 But while the threat to American democracy is real, +Dec48 55 I want to say as clearly as [[we can]]: +Dec49 56 We are not powerless in the face of these threats. -Dec5 57 We are not bystanders in this ongoing attack on democracy. -Dec6 58 There are far more Americans — far more Americans from +Dec50 every — from every background and belief [[[who reject the extreme MAGA ideology || than those that accept it]]]. 59 And, folks, it is within our power, +Dec51 60 it’s in our hands — yours and mine — to stop the assault on +Dec52 American democracy. 61 I believe +Dec53 62 America is at an inflection point — one of those moments +Dec54 [[that determine the shape of everything that’s to come after]]. 63 And now America must choose: 64 +Dec55 to move forward or to move backwards? 65 To build the future or obsess about the past? 66 To be a nation of hope and unity and optimism, or a nation of fear, division, and of darkness? 67 MAGA Republicans have made their choice. +Dec56 68 They embrace anger. +Dec57 69 They thrive on chaos. +Dec58 70 They live not in the light of truth but in the shadow of lies. +Dec59 71 But together — together, we can choose a different path. +Dec60 72 We can choose a better path. +Dec61 73 Forward, to the future. 74 A future of possibility. 75 A future to build and dream and hope. 76 I know this nation. +Dec62 77 I know you, the American people. +Dec63 78 I know your courage. +Dec64 79 I know your hearts. +Dec65 80 And I know our history. +Dec66 81 This is a nation [[that honors our Constitution]]. +Dec67 82 We do not reject it. -Dec7 83 This is a nation [[that believes in the rule of law]]. +Dec68 84 We do not repudiate it. -Dec8 85 This is a nation [[that respects free and fair elections]]. +Dec69 86 We honor the will of the people. +Dec70 87 We do not deny it. -Dec9 88 And this is a nation that rejects violence as a political tool. +Dec71 89 We do not encourage violence. -Dec10 90 We are still an America [[that believes in honesty and decency +Dec72 and respect for others, patriotism, liberty, justice for all, hope, possibilities]]. 91 We are still, at our core, a democracy. +Dec73 92 And yet history tells us [[that blind loyalty to a single leader +Dec74 and a willingness to engage in political violence is fatal to democracy]]. 93 For a long time, we’ve told ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed, +Dec75 94 but it’s not. 95 We have to defend it, protect it, stand up for it — each and -Dec11 +Dec76 every one of us. 96 That’s [[why tonight I’m asking our nation to come together, +Dec77 unite behind the single purpose of defending our democracy regardless of your ideology]]. 97 We’re all called, by duty and conscience, to confront extremists +Dec78 [[who will put their own pursuit of power above all else]]. 98 Democrats, independents, mainstream Republicans: We must be +Dec79 stronger, more determined, and more committed to saving American democracy than MAGA Republicans are to — to destroying American democracy. 99 We, the people, will not let anyone or anything tear us apart. -Dec12 100 Today, there are dangers around us we cannot allow to +Dec80 prevail. 101 We hear — +Dec81 102 you’ve heard it — more +Dec82 103 and more talk about violence as an acceptable political tool in +Dec83 this country. 104 It’s not. -Dec13 105 It can never be an acceptable tool. -Dec14 106 So I want to say this plain and simple: +Dec84 107 There is no place for political violence in America. +Dec85 108 Period. 109 None. 110 Ever. 111 We saw law enforcement brutally attacked on January the 6th. +Dec86 112 seen election officials, poll workers — many of them +Dec87 volunteers of both parties — subjected to intimidation and death threats. 113 And — can you believe it? — +Int1 114 FBI agents just doing their job as directed, facing threats to +Dec250 their own lives from their own fellow citizens. 115 On top of that, there are public figures — today, yesterday, and +Dec88 the day before — predicting and all but calling for mass violence and rioting in the streets. 116 This is inflammatory. +Dec89 117 It’s dangerous. +Dec90 118 It’s against the rule of law. +Dec91 119 And we, the people, must say: +Dec92 120 This is not [[who we are]]. -Dec15 121 Ladies and gentlemen, we can’t be pro-ex- — pro-ex- — pro- -Dec16 insurrectionist and pro-American. 123 They’re incompatible. +Dec93 124 We can’t allow violence to be normalized in this country. -Dec17 125 It’s wrong. +Dec94 126 We each have to reject political violence with — with all the +Dec95 moral clarity and conviction [[this nation can muster]]. 127 Now. 128 We can’t let the integrity of our elections be undermined, -Dec18 129 +Dec96 for that is a path to chaos. 130 Look, +Imp2 131 I know +Dec97 132 poli- — politics can be fierce and mean and nasty in America. +Dec98 133 I get it. +Dec99 134 I believe in the give-and-take of politics, in disagreement and +Dec100 debate and dissent. 135 We’re a big, complicated country. +Dec101 136 But democracy endures +Dec102 137 only if we, the people, respect the guardrails of the republic. +Dec103 138 Only if we, the people, accept the results of free and fair +Dec104 elections. 139 Only if we, the people, see politics not as total war but +Dec105 mediation of our differences. 140 Democracy cannot survive -Dec19 141 when one side believes +Dec106 there are only two outcomes to an election: 142 either they win +Dec107 143 or they were cheated. +Dec108 144 And that’s [[where MAGA Republicans are today]]. +Dec109 145 They don’t understand [[what every patriotic American -Dec20 knows]]: 146 You can’t love your country only -Dec21 147 when you win. +Dec110 148 It’s fundamental. +Dec111 149 American democracy only works +Dec112 150 only if we choose to respect the rule of law and the institutions +Dec113 [[that were set up in this chamber behind me]], 151 only if we respect our legitimate political differences. +Dec114 152 I will not stand by and watch — I will not — the will of the -Dec22 American people be overturned by wild conspiracy theories and baseless, evidence-free claims of fraud. -Dec23 153 I will not stand by and watch elections in this country stolen by -Dec24 people [[who simply refuse to accept that they lost]]. 154 I will not stand by and watch the most fundamental freedom in -Dec25 this country — the freedom to vote and have your vote counted — and — be taken from you and the American people. 155 Look, +Imp3 156 as your President, I will defend our democracy with every fiber +Dec115 of my being, 157 and I’m asking every American to join me. +Dec116 158 Throughout our history, America has often made the greatest +Dec117 progress coming out of some of our darkest moments, like you’re hearing in that bullhorn. 159 I believe +Dec118 160 +Dec119 we can 161 and we must do that again, +Dec120 162 and we are. +Dec121 163 MAGA Republicans look at America +Dec122 164 and see carnage and darkness and despair. +Dec123 165 They spread fear and lies +Dec124 166 lies told for profit and power. +Dec125 167 But I see a very different America — an America with an +Dec126 unlimited future, an America that is about to take off. 168 I hope +Dec127 169 +Dec128 you see it as well. 170 Just look around. +Imp4 171 I believed +Dec129 172 we could lift America from the depths of COVID, +Dec130 173 so we passed the largest economic recovery package since +Dec 131 Franklin Delano Roosevelt. 174 And today, America’s economy is faster, stronger [[than any +Dec132 other advanced nation in the world]]. 175 We have more to go. +Dec133 176 I believed +Dec134 177 we could build a better America, +Dec135 178 so we passed the biggest infrastructure investment since +Dec136 President Dwight D. Eisenhower. 179 And we’ve now embarked on a decade of rebuilding the nation's +Dec137 roads, bridges, highways, ports, water systems, high-speed Internet, railroads. 180 I believed +Dec138 181 we could make America safer, +Dec139 182 so we passed the most significant gun safety law since President +Dec140 Clinton. 183 I believed +Dec141 184 +Dec142 we could go from being the highest cost of prescriptions in the world to making prescription drugs and healthcare more affordable, 185 so we passed the most significant healthcare reforms +Dec143 186 since President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act. +Dec144 187 And I believed +Dec145 188 we could create — we could create a clean energy future and +Dec146 save the planet, 189 so we passed the most important climate initiative ever, ever, +Dec147 +Dec 148 ever. 190 The cynics and the critics tell us [[nothing can get done]], +Dec 149 191 but they are wrong. +Dec150 192 There is not a single thing [[America cannot do]] — not a +Dec 151 single thing beyond our capacity 193 if we do it together. +Dec152 194 It’s never easy. -Dec26 195 But we’re proving [[that in America, no matter how long the +Dec153 road, progress does come]]. 196 Look, +Imp5 197 I know +Dec154 198 the last year — few years have been tough. +Dec155 199 But today, COVID no longer controls our lives. +Dec156 200 More Americans are working than ever. +Dec157 201 Businesses are growing. +Dec158 202 Our schools are open. +Dec159 203 Millions of Americans have been lifted out of poverty. +Dec160 204 Millions of veterans once exposed to toxic burn pits will now +Dec161 get what they deserve for their families and the compa- — compensation. 205 American manufacturing has come alive across the Heartland, +Dec162 206 and the future will be made in America — (applause) — no +Dec163 matter what the white supremacists and the extremists say. 207 I made a bet on you, the American people, +Dec164 208 and that bet is paying off. +Dec165 209 Proving that from darkness — the darkness of Charlottesville, +Dec166 of COVID, of gun violence, of insurrection — we can see the light. 210 Light is now visible. +Dec167 211 Light that will guide us forward not only in words, but in +Dec168 actions — actions for you, for your children, for your grandchildren, for America. 212 Even in this moment, with all the challenges we face, +Dec169 213 I give you my word as a Biden: +Dec170 214 I’ve never been more optimistic about America’s future -Dec29 215 Not because of me, but because of who you are. +Dec172 216 We’re going to end cancer +Dec173 217 +Dec174 as we know it. 218 Mark my words. +Imp6 219 We are going to create millions of new jobs in a clean energy +Dec175 economy. 220 We’re going to think big. +Dec176 221 We’re going to make the 21st century another American +Dec177 century 222 because the world needs us to. +Dec178 223 That’s [[where we need to focus our energy — not in the past, +Dec179 not on divisive culture wars, not on the politics of grievance]], 224 but on a future we can build together. +Dec 180 225 The MAGA Republicans believe +Dec181 226 +Dec182 that for them to succeed, everyone else has to fail. 227 They believe America — +Dec183 228 not like I believe about America. +Dec184 229 I believe +Dec185 230 America is big enough for all of us to succeed, +Dec186 231 and that is the nation [[we’re building: || a nation where no one +Dec 187 is left behind]]. 232 I ran for President +Dec188 233 because I believed +Dec189 234 we were in a battle for the soul of this nation. +Dec190 235 I still believe that to be true. +Dec191 236 I believe +Dec192 237 +Dec193 the soul is the breath, the life, and the essence of [[who we are]]. 238 The soul is [[what makes us “us.”]] +Dec194 239 The soul of America is defined by the sacred proposition [[that +Dec195 all are created equal in the image of God]]. 240 That all are entitled to be treated with decency, dignity, and +Dec 196 respect. 241 That all deserve justice and a shot at lives of prosperity and +Dec197 consequence. 242 And that democracy — democracy must be defended, +Dec198 243 for democracy makes all these things possible. +Dec199 244 Folks, and it’s up to us. +Dec200 245 Democracy begins +Dec201 246 and will be preserved in we, the people’s, habits of heart, in our +Dec 202 character: 247 optimism that is tested yet endures, courage that digs deep when we need it, empathy that fuels democracy, the willingness to see each other not as enemies but as fellow Americans. 248 Look, +Imp7 249 our democracy is imperfect. +Dec203 250 It always has been. +Dec204 251 Notwithstanding those folks you hear on the other side there. 252 They’re entitled to be outrageous. +Dec205 253 This is a democracy. +Dec206 254 But history and common sense — (applause) — good +Dec207 manners is nothing [[they’ve ever suffered from]]. 255 But history and common sense tell us [[that opportunity, +Dec 208 liberty, and justice for all are most likely to come to pass in a democracy]]. 256 We have never fully realized the aspirations of our founding, -Dec30 257 +Dec210 but every generation has opened those doors a little wider to include more people [[who have been excluded before]]. 258 My fellow Americans, America is an idea — the most powerful +Dec211 idea in the history of the world. 259 And it beats in the hearts of the people of this country. +Dec212 260 It beats in all of our hearts. +Dec213 261 It unites America. +Dec214 262 It is the American creed. +Dec215 263 The idea that America guarantees that everyone be treated with +Dec216 dignity. 264 It gives hate no safe harbor. +Dec217 265 It installs in everyone the belief that no matter where you start +Dec218 in life, there’s nothing you can’t achieve. 266 That’s [[who we are]]. +Dec 219 267 That’s [[what we stand for]]. +Dec220 268 That’s [[what we believe]]. +Dec221 269 And that is precisely [[what we are doing: opening doors, +Dec222 creating new possibilities, focusing on the future]]. 270 And we’re only just beginning. +Dec223 271 Our task is to make our nation free and fair, just and strong, +Dec224 noble and whole. 272 And this work is the work of democracy — the work of this +Dec225 generation. 273 It is the work of our time, for all time. +Dec226 274 We can’t afford to have — leave anyone on the sidelines. -Dec28 275 We need everyone to do their part. +Dec227 276 So speak up. +Imp8 277 Speak out. +Imp9 278 Get engaged. +Imp10 279 Vote, +Imp11 280 vote, +Imp12 281 vote. +Imp13 282 And if we all do our duty — +Dec228 283 if we do our duty in 2022 and beyond, +Dec229 284 then ages still to come will say we — all of us here — +Dec230 285 we kept the faith. +Dec231 286 We preserved democracy. +Dec232 287 We heeded our wor- — we — +Dec 233 288 we heeded not our worst instincts but our better angels. +Dec234 289 And we proved [[that, for all its imperfections, America is still +Dec235 the beacon to the world, an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept]]. 290 There is nothing more important, nothing more sacred, nothing +Dec236 more American. 291 That’s our soul. +Dec237 292 That’s [[who we truly are]]. +Dec 238 293 And that’s [[who must]] — +Dec239 294 we must always be. +Dec240 295 And I have no doubt — none –– [[[that this is who we will be +Dec241 and that we’ll come together as a nation]]]. 296 That we’ll secure our democracy. +Dec242 297 That for the next 200 years, we’ll have [[what we had the past +Dec 243 200 years: the greatest nation on the face of the Earth]]. 298 We just need to remember who we are. +Dec244 299 We are the United States of America. +Dec245 300 The United States of America. 301 And may God protect our nation. +Dec246 302 And may God protect all those who stand watch over our +Dec247 democracy. 303 God bless you all. +Dec248 304 Democracy. 305 Thank you. +Dec249
