Types of Network
Personal Area Network (PAN)
This is a network for communication among personal devices. A personal area network (PAN) connects
electronic devices within a user's immediate area. The size of a PAN ranges from a few centimeters to a
few meters. PAN network connections can either be wired or wireless.
Local Area Network (LAN)
When computers are interconnected within a limited geographical. A Local Area Network (LAN) is a group
of computers and other devices that are connected together over a network and are all in the same
location—typically within a single building like an office or home.
Wide Area Network (WAN)
When a network is spread across cities, countries, or even continents, covering a large geographical area,
it becomes a ‘Wide Area Network’. A wide-area network (WAN) is a collection of local-area networks
(LANs) or other networks that communicate with one another.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
When computers are interconnected within the same geographical area. A metropolitan area network
(MAN) is a computer network that connects computers within a metropolitan area, which could be a single
large city, multiple cities, and towns, or any given large area with multiple buildings.
