A.
BENEFITS OF COMPUTERIZED MANUFACTURING SYSTEM
1. Increase labour productivity: This helps to perform task more efficiently than
manual operations; greater output per hour of labour input.
2. Reduce manual task: This reduces several operations that are repetitive or
boring to workers.
3. Reduce labour cost.
4. Improve labour quality.
5. Accomplishes processes that cannot be done manually.
6. Avoid high cost of not automating.
7. Reduce manufacturing load time.
B.
WHAT ARE MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS?
A manufacturing system is a collection of integrated equipment and human
resources whose function is to perform one or more processing/assembly
operations on a starting raw materials, parts or set of parts. The integrated
equipment are production machines and tools, material handling and work
positioning devices and computer systems.
PRODUCTION SYSTEM: This is a collection of people, equipment, and other
procedures organized to perform the manufacturing operations of a company.
Production systems have two components which are:
Facilities, and
Manufacturing support systems.
Facilities: This is the physical facilities of the production system which includes
the equipment, the way the equipment is laid out, and the factory in which the
factory is located.
Manufacturing Support System is the procedure used by the company to
manage production and to solve the technical and logistics problems
encountered in ordering materials, moving the work through the factory and
ensuring that products meet quality standard.
C.
WHAT IS PROGRAMMABLE AUTOMATION AND ITS FEATURES?
In programmable automation, the production equipment is designed
with the capability to enable changing the order/sequence of operations
to allow for different product configuration. The operation sequence is
controlled by a program, which is a set of instruction coded so that they
can be read and interpreted by the system. New program can be
prepared and entered into the equipment to produce new products.
FEATURES OF PROGRAMMABLE AUTOMATION
1. Lower production rate than fixed automation.
2. Flexibility to deal with variations and changes in product configuration.
3. High investment in general purpose equipment.
4. High suitability for batch production.
D.
FLEXIBLE AUTOMATION AND ITS FEATURES
This is an extension of programmable automation. In flexible
automation, varieties of parts of products with no time lost for change
over from one design to the next. Production time is not lost while
reprogramming the system and altering the physical setup (tooling,
fixtures, machine settings). Flexible automation is possible because the
differences between parts processed by the system are not signified,
therefore the amount of change over between design is minimal.
Features of Flexible Automation are:
1. Medium production rate.
2. High investment for a custom engineer.
3. Continuous production of variable mixtures of parts or products.
4. Flexibility to deal with product design variation.
