LAC Session
Maam Abiera presented the topic for LAC Session: Developing Lessons Using
Differentiated Developmentally Appropriate Learning Differences To Address Learners’
Gender Needs, Strengths, Interests And Experiences. Presently, it is a challenge for teachers
how to retain the attention of the students since most of the time, if students are not interested
in the subject, they would just play mobile games and don’t listen. Maam Abiera presented
various situation per subject area and discussed how differentiated learning is done. She also
presented sample activities to be used in classroom setting. Differentiation can also be done in
other aspects of the lesson, such as content, process, product and learning environment.
Whether teachers apply this, the use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a
successful approach to instruction. So whenever a teacher reaches out to an individual or small
group to vary his or her teaching in order to create the best learning experience possible, that
teacher is differentiating instruction. Maam Abiera also emphasized that teachers can
differentiate, at least, four classroom elements based on student readiness, interest, or learning
profile and this is according to content, process, product and learning environment.
The principle that one size fits all does not apply in our instruction and is retroactive for
our students that is why we need to adapt differentiated instruction. To further support this,
Maam Abiera presented the illustration of practice no. 1: differentiated instruction based on
learners’ interests. In the example, the science teacher used cubing strategy in her lesson by
requiring the learners to look at a topic from six different angles. The presentation of the outputs
is based on their interests. This strategy allows students to think critically about a topic.
The second illustration of practice no. 2 is differentiated instruction based on learners’
gender. In the example, the science teacher differentiates teaching through flexible grouping. He
groups the class in such a way that it respects he learners’ diversity. The third illustration of
practice no. 2 is differentiated instruction based on learners’ experiences. The teacher provided
a common and familiar topic for the learners to work on. Another strategy was presented, the
tiered instruction. The steps on how to do tiered instruction was also discussed. There were

also some differentiated strategies which can be used in addressing learners’ gender, needs,
strengths, interests and experiences. These are the anchor activities, centers, choice boards,
compacting, flexible grouping, group investigations, jigsaw, learning contracts, stations, Socratic
seminar, tic-tac-toe, tiered assignments and web quests.
Finally, Ma’am Abiera reminded about the requisition of the school form 10 of transferees
and the lowest possible grade that would appear in the report card.
