NCAS Mission 1; Caleb Ibarra EXPLORATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT MISSION DIRECTORATE WHY DOES THIS DIRECTORATE MATTER TO ME? The ESDMD matters to me because it pushes the bounds of engineering and inspires me to do the same MISSION SELECTION: ORION SPACECRAFT Responsible for the design and creation of the spacecraft used in the Artemis missions Exploring the surface of the moon and deep space During Artemis III and future missions, the Orion will bring astronauts and scientific equipment to the lunar surface at the Moon’s southern pole to collect data and samples. These samples will allow scientists to discover more about the surface of the Moon. (NASA, 2024). NASA Understanding the Sun, Solar System, and universe Through the Artemis IV mission, the Orion will bring astronauts to Gateway and dock on to the new lunar base. The Orion-Gateway docking will allow research and examination of the solar system in new ways, and prepare Gateway for further space operations (NASA, 2024). NASA Develop capabilities and perform research to safeguard explorers NASA/Michael DeMocker The Orion Spacecraft houses many technologies for the safety of each and every astronaut, including but not limited to life support, power systems, and an emergency launch abort system (Peters, 2021, 2022).
