Activity 1: Exploring Theories of the Universe’s Origin
Direction: Complete the table of the different theories and hypothesis about
the origin of the universe and the solar system. Explain the key concepts,
strength and weaknesses of each theory and hypothesis. The Big bang
Theory was already done for you as an example.

Big Bang Theory
Proposed by Georges
Lemaitre. It suggests
that the universe started
from a singular point
and is continuously
expanding. According
to this theory, the
universe is at least 13. 8
billion years old and the
Earth/Solar System is at
least 4.5 billion years
old.
The Cosmic Microwave
background supports
this theory. It is currently
the most acceptable
scientific explanation on
how the universe was
created.
Steady State Theory
Cyclic Model
Multiverse Model
Encounter
Hypothesis
Nebular Hypothesis
Protoplanet
Hypothesis
Guide questions:
1. Does the cyclical model agree with the big bang theory? Explain.
2. Does the protoplanet hypothesis derived from the nebular
hypothesis? Explain.
3. In your opinion what part of the universe needs to be discovered or
explored more? Explain.
