It’s hard to imagine a
day at work being any
worse than being
involved in an accident.
That’s why it’s
important to have a
solid understanding of
the procedures you
need to follow.
Objectives:
• Discuss the specific
procedures to follow after
an accident occurs
• Explain what do to once
allowed to leave the
scene of an accident
When an Accident Occurs
What is an Accident:
• Involves a fatality
• Causes an injury
serious enough to
require immediate
medical treatment
away from the scene
• Requires a vehicle to be
towed from the scene
After an Accident:
Stop
Warn
Check for Injuries
Get Vehicle far off
road and then:
Shut off the engine
Turn on your four-way
flashers
Set the emergency brake
Check yourself for
injuries
Warning Devices:
Act quickly (10 minutes)
Certain hazardous loads only
allow bidirectional triangles
Wear reflective vest
Location
Visibility obstructions
Follow placement guidelines
Check cargo for damage
Check for Injuries:
Provide injured person(s) with
“reasonable assistance” (call for
medical help and keep them
warm and dry)
Move injured person(s) only
when in immediate danger
Administer first aid (if trained)
Step aside as soon as a qualified
responder arrives
Contact Law
Enforcement:
Provide exact location
of the accident
Number of injured
persons and the severity
of their injuries
The extent of any vehicle
or property damage
Give your contact
information
Document the Incident:
Record information
Use accident report kit, if
provided by your company
Details:
Date, time, and location
Who was involved
Any injuries or fatalities
Description of event
Vehicle or property damage
Any hazardous material released
(other than fuel)
Witness information
Sketch/diagram the accident
scene
Photos:
All sides of any involved
vehicles
Skid marks
Road debris
The entire accident
scene
Notify Your Company:
Provide key information
Give facts as included in
documentation
Follow company policies
Follow instructions, next
steps
After an Accident
Ask yourself:
Have I gathered as much detail
about the accident as I could?
Am I physically and mentally
ready to get back on the road?
Required Post Accident
Alcohol/Drug Tests:
DOT prohibits alcohol within 8
hours of accident, if test not
yet administered
Drug use prohibited at all times
Drug test post-accident
administered up to 32 hours
after accident
