PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION
WHAT IS PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION?
Passive fire protection is a system built-in through regulation of
materials and structural components, compartmentalization,
and fire-resistant separation, including opening protection,
based on fire resistance levels.
PURPOSE OF PASSIVE PROTECTION SYSTEMS:
•
•
•
•
•
Prevent simultaneous building collapse during fire
Minimize fire intensity to prevent flashover
Allow occupants time to evacuate
Maintain building function safely
Protect firefighting personnel
PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION
1.
•
•
•
•
•
•
Material characteristics:
Quality classification
Use of fire-retardant materials
Quantity and placement of
combustible materials
Fire load and ventilation
factors
Thermal inertia (kρc factors)
Integration with active
protection & Fire Safety
Management
2.
•
•
•
Compartmentalization:
Compartementlization to
prevent fire spread
Influencing factors:
occupancy load, building
type, floor area, height, open
space/access needs, fire load,
active protection
Compartement in SNI 03-17362000: includes fire-rated walls
on floors, shafts, equipment
zones
3.
•
•
Opening Protection:
All penetrations in walls,
roofs, floors (including shaft
openings, doors, ducts) must
be protected with fire
stopping (e.g., canopy,
fire/smoke dampers)
Ventilation openings for
utility shafts must be fully
enclosed top-to-bottom
with fire-rated construction
ROLE OF THE MINISTRY OF PUBLIC WORKS
The Ministry of Public Works, as the Central Government, in accordance with its authority, organizes building
construction development through regulatory, empowerment, and supervision activities so that the building
construction implementation process can take place in an orderly manner and the reliability of the building is
achieved in accordance with its function, as well as the realization of legal certainty.
