Most of the work cannot be done using bare hands. To do the task, electrical tools or materials are needed to perform the job. This lesson will discuss the function/use of each tool or materials used in electrical wiring installations. The following are common electrical tools needed in the installation of electrical wiring/devices 1. Screwdrivers -these tools are made of steel hardened and tempered at the tip used to loosen or tighten screws with slotted heads. They come in various sizes and shapes. 1.1 Flat Screwdriver - the blade tip is wedge shaped and resembles a negative (-) sign. This is used to drive screws with a single slot head. 1.2 Phillips Screwdriver- this has a cross tip resembling a positive (+) sign. This is used to drive screws with cross slot heads. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Screw_Driver_display.jpg https://www.peakpx.com/643491/phillips-screw-screwdrivers-close-up-closeup-no-people 1.3 Allen Screwdriver/ Wrench- This could be in the shape of screwdriver or a wrench, its function is to drive a screw with hexagonal slot head. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allen_wrench_and_screw_(PSF).png 1.4 Stubby Screwdriver - it comes in either Standard or Phillips screwdriver with short shank or blade and a shorted handle, used to turn screws in tight space where standard screwdriver cannot be used. https://www.dreamstime.com/stockphoto-two-old-red-short-screwdrivers-isolated-white-image36880550 2. Pliers - are made of metal with insulators in the handle. They are used for cutting, twisting, bending, and holding wires and cables. 2.1 Combination Pliers – usually called as linemen’s pliers, used to hold, bend, and cut electrical wires and cables. 2.2 Side Cutting Pliers – also called as diagonal pliers. This type of pliers is used for cutting small to medium size of wires https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Knipex_03_01_200.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cutting_tool_1a.jpg 2.3 Long Nose Pliers - This could be in the shape of screwdriver or a wrench, its function is to drive a screw with hexagonal slot head. 4 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Klein_Tools_D203-6.jpg 3. Claw Hammer - a special type of hammer, which is used in pounding nails, striking surfaces, and extracting nails from some object or surface. https://comm ons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cla w-hammer.jpg 4. Hacksaw this tool is used to manually cut metal/PVC conduits and other metals. https://tolsen.com.ph/products /electrician-s-knife 6. Electric Drill it is used in making holes on woods, metals, and concrete walls. 5. Electrician’s Knife - used to remove insulation of big and small wires when wire stripper cannot be used https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacksaw https://pixabay.com/vectors/power-drilldrill-hammer-drill-154903/ 7. Wire Stripper - this is a tool used for removing insulation of medium-sized wires. It has two types: 1.Manual - has round holes that correspond to wire size. Removing of insulation is done while squeezing and pulling out wire. This can also be used to cut mediumsized copper wires. 2. Automatic - operated by squeezing where one end will hold the wire and the other will remove the insulation, 7.1 Manual has spring to retain to original position. https://www.flickr.com/p hotos/spar kfun/11844600454 7.2 Automatic https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki /File: Compound_Automatic_Wire_ Stripper.jpg 8.Pipe bender – a tool used to bend rigid metallic conduit by the use of hands and/or foot 1.Hydraulic Pipe bender – this type of bender uses hydraulic (oil) pressure to bend various sizes of metallic pipes 7.1 Manual https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File :Hand_Bender_for_EMT_J._Morris_CC _BY-SA-3.0.jpg 7.2 Hydraulic https://www.screwfix.com/p/rothenberger57961-hydraulic-pipe-bender-3-8-2/3717k 9. Pull-push rule – also known as tape measure, which is retractable and coils into a compact case. It is used for measuring linear and perpendicular distance, usually has inch and centimeter as units of measurement https://www.pikrepo.com/fanqc/gray-tape-measureagainst-white-background 10. Angle Grinder – an electric tool that has a replaceable disc and can be used in cutting, grinding, and polishing. https://pixabay.com/photos/angle-grinder-black4774698/ 5 Electrical materials/devices are essential components to safely utilize electricity when delivered by the power distribution companies. The following are the most common electrical materials/devices: 1. Convenience Outlet (CO)- is a device that acts as a convenient source of electrical energy for current consuming appliances. It is where the male plug of an appliance is inserted and usually fastened on the wall or connected in an extension cord. This can be surface type or flush type. Flush type C.O. https://lsgindustrial.com/product/convenie nce-outlet-with-ground-in-plate-p3-eg-pkomni/ 2. There are many shapes, designs and types and are classified as hanging, Flush type https://publicdomainvectors.org/en/freeflush and surface types. clipart/Three-light-switches/39774.html ` 3. Receptacle - is a device that holds the lamp in place to safely connect the wires to the circuit. This is usually made of porcelain or plastic and classified as flush, hanging (weather-proof/chain) and surface types. Flush type 4. Junction Box - an octagonal shaped electrical material where the connections or joints of wire are being done. It is also where the flush type receptacle is attached. This could be made of metal or (PVC) Polyvinylchloride. https://shopee.ph/Surer-177Surface-3-Gang-ConvenienceOutlet-Box-of-12-i.59714302.977275086 Surface type https://topmosthardware.p h/product/firefly-surfacetype-mounted-snapswitch/?v=a25496ebf095 Surface type https://lsgindustrial.com/prod uct/omni-e27-ceilingreceptacle-model-e27-040/ Surface type CO https://www.1000bulbs.co m/product/65454/SOCKD3729.html Hanging type https://shopee.ph/OMNIHanging-Switchi.28396621.732922857 Hanging type https://www.bplampsupply.com/p roduct/4730_rubber-coatedsocket-with-6-inch-leads 5.
