WORD OF ADVICE
• Candidates must spend sufficient time on planning, to ensure that their
answers are:
1. Structured logically
2. Balanced in terms of the depth of discussion required with the breadth
of points to be made
3. Covering the most important points
4. Not padded out with material that does not address the task
requirements, as this scores no marks
5. Not making the same point two (or more) times
6. Not overlapping

Top reasons for failing SBL
• In most cases, candidates who failed the exam did so because of:
1. lack of analysis skills (demonstrated through an inability to select and then
appropriately use relevant information to answer task requirements),
2. not explaining why the points being made were important
3. failure to respond to the requirements in a professional manner
4. a poor level of technical knowledge
5. wasting time making irrelevant points
6. failure to provide everything that the requirements specified

Key success point for SBL
Key success point for SBL
The marking scheme includes 80
Technical marks for the correct
use and application of technical
knowledge. For every element of
technical
content,
answers
needed to be applied to the case.
Repetition of rote learned
knowledge attracts few if any
marks.
Marking scheme included 20 marks for Professional
skills and competencies. The skill being examined in
the requirement should have been evident in how
candidates answered the task, although candidates
may have drawn on other skills as well when
answering. When awarding Professional skills marks,
markers looked primarily at the professional skill
being tested in the task requirement, but also looked
at the general professionalism that candidates
demonstrated (which includes consideration of
logical, well presented answers, which avoid
unnecessary repetition and answer the question set).
Markers are also looking for answers to be presented
in an appropriate tone for the recipient.

Maximizing professional marks
• Maximize your ability to score professional marks, out of 20 aim at
gaining at least 75% marks. They are easy, you simply need to have clarity
on how to gain them. The professional marks can be maximize if you:
1. Put the answer in right format (Guidance on right format can be found
at this hyperlink https://bit.ly/3ukGVdZ)
2. Head your answer properly( the more headings you use in your answer
the better for you to demonstrate general professionalism)
3. Avoid long paragraph ( the max length of each para should be 3-4
sentences long)
4. Put the answer in right tone (demonstrate the professional skill
requested under each requirement carefully by looking at the prompt
given)

https://www.facebook.com/SBLbyKK
• Examples:
• Q1(a) from Dec 18 exams asked for:
1
The skill to be
demonstrated is
analysis but how?
Professional skills marks are available for demonstrating analysis skills in investigating and
considering information from a range of sources. (3 marks)
2 But how?
By investigating &
considering information
from range of sources
3
Read the sentence after the
skill completely to
understand how to
demonstrate it , and this is
what I refer as
PROMPT(HINT)

Demonstrating the professional skills
by carefully looking at the prompt
So a student who consider information from range of exhibits from writing answer to Q1(a) will most
likely be the one demonstrating the analysis skill appropriately. Each time read the statement after
the skill , as it gives you hint or prompt how to go about it

PROFESSIONAL MARKS
• Examiner feedback
• Careful attention to the format required is very important and
student should focus on it, not ignore it or reproduce answer in
wrong format.
• Whatever the format requested, the answer should be presented
and structured clearly, with headers throughout the answer and
avoids overlong paragraphs ( max length of a para shouldn’t be
more than 3-4 sentences) or repetitive information.

Reading the requirement is key
• Reading of requirement is very important in SBL paper as this help
you pick up:
• The format to use to answer question
• The technical requirement (what to do?)
• Professional skills which need to be demonstrated.

FETCHING 2 MARKS PER POINT
• Up to two marks are often available for a well-developed point made. However,
candidates are reminded that this will only occur when the candidate has
successfully identified/ explained a relevant point AND has then correctly developed
this point by:
• Evaluating using information provided
• Explaining carefully in context of case
• Supporting the point made with relevant examples from the case material
https://www.youtube.com/kashifkamran
https://www.facebook.com/SBLbyKK
Key areas of focus
• Weaker candidates often used prelearned knowledge as the basis for most of
their answers and did not adequately
integrate or apply the case material
• Stronger candidates integrated and used
information from the case study materials
throughout their answers, selecting
relevant technical knowledge to support
the applied points they were making. They
demonstrated professional skills
https://www.youtube.com/kashifkamran
SBL JUNE 21 TIPS
• It is especially important that
candidates spend sufficient time reading
and assimilating the information within
the exhibits which make up the case
study materials. Often answers failed to
make sufficient reference to the exhibits
or failed to make use of the full range of
material in the exhibits.
• Candidates should read the exhibits
whilst keeping the requirements of each
question in mind, as this will help them to
identify which tasks will be drawing on
the material in each exhibit.

Key areas of focus
• However, candidates must remember that
merely reproducing material from the
exhibits without commenting on it or
developing points will not score marks.
• In particular, candidates taking the exams on
computer in previous attempts cut and
pasted material from the exhibits into their
answers without adding anything to it.
• Although this examination did not follow a
timeline and therefore candidates should not
have been disadvantaged by answering
questions out of sequence, it is recommended
that candidates answer the requirements in
order.
https://www.youtube.com/kashifkamran
• Markers will not give additional
marks for points which are repeated or
re-stated, even if slightly reworded.
• Candidates must remember that apart
from wasting valuable exam time, this
approach can also have an adverse
impact on the general professionalism
demonstrated, and therefore may affect
the professional mark awarded.

SBL CBE-key areas of focus
• CBE candidates often copied material in from
the task requirements and content of the
exhibits. Copying in the task requirements had
the advantage that candidates did not need to
keep looking at the requirements and this may
have helped keep them more focused on the
tasks.
• However candidates often cut and pasted in
exhibit material without commenting on it
further and this could not be awarded marks.
• Many candidates made good use of the
spreadsheet function in the computerbased exam to help them undertake the
financial analysis .
• However, it was quite disappointing to
see that some candidates failed to make
any use of this facility and also failed to
use the slides and notes facility to help
them structure answers requiring slide
format .
Candidates are reminded to make use of these facilities in the CBE, as they
are designed to help them answer questions more effectively.

SBL CBE-key areas of focus
• Examiner report for recent CBE sittings mentioned that
• “It was disappointing and rather baffling as to why so many CBE candidates
failed to present their answers in the correct format.
• There was a much larger proportion of candidates sitting in the CBE
environment who failed to use the correct format than those sitting the
Paper based exams.
• It is hard to understand why, but candidates are reminded that the requested
presentation formats are as relevant to CBE candidates as to PBE candidates.
• Not presenting in the correct format has an adverse impact on professional
skills marks awarded.”
