‘Patagonia’ is an American outdoor clothing and gear
company known for its commitment to environmental and
social responsibility. The ‘Private Benefited Corporation’,
was founded in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard, whose an
accomplished rock climber. He began selling his own
mountain climbing gear in 1957 before soon partnering
with ‘Tom Frost’ to create the popular brand ‘Patagonia’.
Patagonia is based out of Ventura, California, U.S. which is
currently headed by Ryan Gellert(CEO) and Charles R.
Conn(Chair). Patagonia has grown to become a prominent
player in the outdoor industry, with a strong focus on
sustainable practices and corporate activism. The
company is widely recognized for its high-quality outdoor
apparel and equipment, including clothing for activities
such as hiking, climbing, skiing, and surfing. Its also known
for its durable & eco-friendly materials, such as, organic
cotton and recycled polyester. What sets Patagonia apart
from the rest of the market is its its dedication towards
environmental conservation and social responsibility. The
company donates a percentage of its profits to grassroots
environmental organizations and actively engages in
environmental advocacy & education. In 2022, Yvon
Chouinard transferred ownership of Patagonia to the
Patagonia Purpose Trust & the Holdfast Collective, a
nonprofit organisation, this change in ownership allowed
it to address climate change and protect land. As of 2022,
Patagonia makes an estimated $1.5 billion dollars in
annual revenue and employ around 3000 people.
Patagonia’s mission statement is: “We’re in business to
save our home planet”. This mission reflects their
dedication to addressing the environment crisis and
promoting practices. Patagonia doesn’t have a formal
vision statement but they strive to follow their core values.
They aim to create high-quality, long lasting, and
repairable products that minimize environmental impact
and promote sustainable practices. It uses its business to
support environmental causes and partner with grassroots
organizations. They examine their practices and learn from
their mistakes. They work to reduce their impact, share
solutions, and embrace regenerative practices.
