Committee: United Nations Security Council
Topic: The Militarization of Space and the Prevention of an Arms Race
The fast progress in space technology has created many opportunities, but it has also raised
concerns about space becoming more militarized. Countries are building and using space defence
and surveillance systems, which increases the chances of a space arms race. It is important to
prevent space from being militarized so that it can continue to be used peacefully for science,
business, and exploration.
The militarization of space is not a new issue. During the Cold War, both the United States and
the Soviet Union began developing technologies that could be used to dominate outer space. The
1967 Outer Space Treaty was established to prevent the placement of nuclear weapons in space
and to promote peaceful uses of space. However, in recent years, advancements in technology
have led to renewed interest in space-based defense systems. The competition among nations to
develop anti-satellite weapons and space-based surveillance has intensified.
South Korea believes space should remain a conflict-free zone, and emphasize the importance of
cooperation to prevent space from turning into a battleground. South Korea has consistently
supported UN resolutions aimed at preventing the militarization of space and has contributed to
international discussions on space governance. South Korea has also invested in space
technology for peaceful purposes, such as climate monitoring, disaster management, and
scientific research.
The militarization of space could lead to several problems. If countries put weapons in space, it
could increase tensions and possibly lead to conflicts. Testing weapons in space can create
dangerous debris that threatens satellites and future missions. Additionally, the possibility of
countries competing for valuable resources in space might lead to disagreements and disputes
over control. If space becomes weaponized, it could weaken global security and undermine
existing arms control agreements, posing serious risks to peace and stability.
To prevent an arms race in space, several steps should be taken. First, treaties like the Outer
Space Treaty (1967) should be updated to ban weapons in space, with South Korea supporting
this effort to match modern technology. Countries should also be open about their space
activities and allow inspections to build trust, with regular international meetings to share plans.
Nations should cooperate on peaceful space projects, and South Korea is willing to join missions
focused on research, disaster prevention, and climate monitoring. Lastly, an international
organization should be created to regulate space activities and ensure space is used peacefully,
with South Korea supporting equal participation from all countries.
Militarizing space is a big threat to global security and the future of space exploration. By
working together, being open, and making stronger legal agreements, the international
community can prevent a space arms race.
