A substance abuse problem is assessed if a client’s
use of alcohol or other mood-altering drugs has
undesired effects on his or her life or on the lives of
others.
Substance abuse counseling is a practice that is (a)
evidence-based, (b) respectful and positive toward
clients, (c) complex, (d) collaborative, (e) contextual, (f)
multiculturally competent, (g) oriented toward social
justice, and (h) built on a strong base of professional
ethics.
