Double Wedding Ring Floral Fill
Machine Embroidery Quilt Block
Laura's Sewing Studio
For the 6x10 Hoop
Traditionally the Double Wedding Ring quilt is a pieced quilt top pattern, in which the rings are
pieced together with a collage of a quilter's fabric stash. However, with this design, the
embroidery machine sews one fourth of the wedding ring pattern on the background fabric of
your choice. Thread colors achieve the desired color scheme. The embroidery design achieves
the pattern with a simple, yet elegant floral fill. Should this concept prove popular, more
elaborate patterns may follow.
While the wedding ring pattern is elegantly simple, the variations in how to apply the pattern,
quilt and embellish the final project, are far more than can be shown here. That’s why I’d love to
see your interpretation of my Double Wedding Ring Machine Embroidery Quilt Block.
Design Specifics:
•
The arc of the 6x10 Double Wedding Ring design is 9 ½ inches long from point to
point, creating a 7 inch finished quilt square.
•
Background Fabrics:
cottons.
•
Embroidery Threads: For color fastness and durability, use polyester embroidery
threads for the top and pre-wound bobbins.
•
Quilting and Construction Threads: As a general rule, if quilting with cotton fabrics,
then a good quality cotton thread is best for quilting and seam construction, as it is
easier to mend a broken seam than repair a torn fabric.
•
Stabilizer: One layer of tear away stabilizer.
•
Needle: Appropriate for the thread and fabrics. A size 12 Topstitch was used to
create the projects found on the website.
For quilt projects, my personal favorites are good quality
Hint: The project goes easier and faster when the all the required background
fabric and stabilizer is prepare ahead, pre-cut and ready to be embroidered.
The background fabric must be cut large enough to fit into the 6x10 hoop. It also
needs to be at least 12 inches wide. For example, my 6x10 hoop requires a fabric
square 18 inches by 12 inches for this project, to allow the blocks to be cut out on
point, while allowing for a 1 inch seam all around.
The stabilizer must be cut the same size as the background fabric.

Instructions:
1. Hoop background fabric with one layer of stabilizer underneath.
2. Sew color #1 – This is the whole arc. The choice of color depends on the pattern
desired. If creating a Rainbow Double Wedding Quilt, then select the embroidery
thread colors and determine how many of each color quilt block will be needed to
complete the quilt top. For color schemes and block arrangements, please visit my
Double Wedding Ring webpage.
3. Sew color #2 – Sewn with a thread that matches the background fabric. Stitches the
quilt block outline, providing a guideline with which to cut out the quilt block squares.
4. Once sewn, remove from the hoop.
5. Remove any excess stabilizer from the quilt blocks.
6. Use a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler to cut out the block with either a ½ inch or ¼ inch
seam allowance. Use the stitched block outline as a guide for cutting out the blocks.
Cut ½ inch or ¼ inch outside these stitched block outlines.
7. With all the required quilt blocks sewn, assemble the quilt top to the desired layout
and complete the quilt using conventional quilting and construction techniques.
Recommendation:
Novice quilt makers should consider consulting an
experienced quilter either through the local quilting guild or quilt shop before
tackling the task of piecing and constructing a quilt top.
