Cambridge Primary Checkpoint SCIENCE 0846/02 October 2021 Paper 2 FINAL MARK SCHEME Maximum Mark: 50 Published This mark scheme is published as an aid to teachers and candidates, to indicate the requirements of the examination. It shows the basis on which Markers were instructed to award marks. It does not indicate the details of the discussions that took place at the Markers’ meeting before marking began, which would have considered the acceptability of alternative answers. Mark schemes should be read in conjunction with the question paper and the End of Series Report. Cambridge will not enter into discussions about these mark schemes. This document has 20 pages. Any blank pages are indicated. Professional judgement can be used in these cases, providing it matches the marking points and further information in the mark scheme. Answers may have words spelt incorrectly. Credit is normally given for phonetically correct answers, unless the word has a scientifically different meaning. For example, where the answer should be antennae, credit will be given for antena but not for anthen (too close to anther). Only the science is being assessed so answers do not need to be grammatically correct. Significant figures will be indicated in the question or in the mark scheme. Unless specified all marking points are independent. Annotations and abbreviations / or alternate responses for the same marking point ( ) brackets the words or units in brackets do not need to be stated, for example, (recycles or releases or provides) minerals = minerals scores the mark underline exact word is required Accept an acceptable response Do not accept indicates an incorrect response that would contradict another otherwise correct alternative Ignore indicates an irrelevant answer that is not creditworthy. Full marks can still be achieved even with answers that are ignored. Note provides extra information when necessary ecf error carried forward; marks are awarded if an incorrect response has been carried forward from earlier working, provided the subsequent working is correct ora or reverse argument; for example, as mass increases, volume increases could be written as mass decreases, volume decreases Page 2 of 20 0846/02 Checkpoint Primary – Mark Scheme PUBLISHED Question 1(a) Answer October 2021 Marks (idea that) group A can fly / have wings Further information 1 or (idea that) group B cannot fly / do not have wings Accept answers without specifying A or B e.g. ‘flying and not flying animals’ / ‘(does it) fly’ / ‘(does it have) wings’ / fly and walk Ignore group B have legs / group B walk / land animals / terrestrial / how they travel Do not accept feathers / whiskers / swimming / backbone / tail 1(b) group C group D (frog) (snake) gorilla snail 1 all correct any order Ignore frog and snake rewritten as long as in the correct column horse 1(c) legs / no legs 1 Accept feet / no feet / limbs / no limbs / toes / no toes Ignore hands / arms / paws Ignore description movement and how they move, e.g. ‘how they travel’ / walk and crawl / slither / drag Page 3 of 20 0846/02 Checkpoint Primary – Mark Scheme PUBLISHED Question 2 Answer mixture October 2021 Marks separation method dissolve in water and filter iron powder and aluminium powder use a magnet sand and salt burn the mixture salt solution evaporate the mixture sand and water melt the mixture lumps of marble and powdered marble sieve the mixture filter the mixture Page 4 of 20 Further Information 5 each correct line = 1 mark more than one line from a mixture to different separation methods = 0 marks for that mixture 0846/02 Checkpoint Primary – Mark Scheme PUBLISHED Question Answer Marks 3 1 N 3 K I L O W Accept (for 1 down) N for newtons N G R A M 3 each correct answer = 1 mark Accept (for 3 across) grams or g or kg for kilograms O F Further Information E T 2 October 2021 S R C E Page 5 of 20 Accept answers written next to the clues, but answers in the crossword puzzle take precedence 0846/02 Checkpoint Primary – Mark Scheme PUBLISHED Question 4 Question 5 Answer October 2021 Marks part function flower takes in light leaf for reproduction root transports water stem takes in water Answer 2 all four correct = 2 marks two or three correct = 1 mark one correct = 0 marks more than one line from a part to different functions = 0 marks for that part Marks Copper sulfate is soluble in water.
