Exploring deepfakes
Overview
Research a real-world example of a deepfake, examine its impact, and share your
personal insights about the ethical and societal implications.
Choose a platform to write up your report. You can use Google Documents,
Microsoft Word or provide a hand-written report.
Choose a famous deepfake case
Examples include:
The Obama deepfake speech created to demonstrate the potential
dangers of deepfakes.
A viral celebrity deepfake, such as Tom Cruise on TikTok.
Non-consensual use of deepfakes in social media scandals.
Positive cases, such as using deepfakes for accessibility or historical
reenactments.
Research the case
Summary: Describe what happened in the case. Who was involved? What
was the deepfake used for?
Purpose: Explain whether the deepfake was used positively (e.g.,
education, accessibility) or negatively (e.g., fraud, misinformation).
Impact: What consequences did the deepfake have on the people involved
or society in general?
Examination and Opinion
Was the use of the deepfake ethical? Why or why not?
Should there be rules or laws to prevent similar deepfakes?

Formatting requirements
Length: 1–2 pages, typed or neatly handwritten.
Structure:
Title: Include the title of your report and the case you’re examining.
Introduction: Briefly introduce deepfakes and the case you’re focusing
on.
Main Body: Provide a detailed summary, analysis, and explanation.
Conclusion: Share your opinion and suggestions for future regulations
or uses.
Include at least one source (website, article, or video) that helped you with
your research.
Bring it back to class
Submit the written report on the due date. Ask your teacher for the due
date.
Be prepared to share your findings with the class.
