1. Short Review
In the last lesson, you were introduced to define Antonyms and to identify
the opposite meaning of a given word.

Purpose
Activity 1
1. Pass out attached word cards, one per student. Instruct the students to
read their word, then move around the room to see if they can find a
word to add to their word to create a word that has a different meaning.
Once a match has been made, those students will stand together in the
room. (Check to make sure their word is correct)

2. Have students share their word and give a definition of the word they
created to the class.
What do you call the words with two or more words that are combined
together to form a new word and new meaning?
Compound word- comes from two different words that have been put
together to form a new word with a new meaning.

Compound Words

There are three types of compound words. These are closed compound
Deepening
words, open compound words and hyphenated compound words.
Understanding
Closed compound words are written as one word with no space. Examples
are: Newspaper, Someone, Raincoat
Open compound word is written with space between words. Examples:
Mother tongue, Living room, Home port
Hyphenated compound word are words connected with a hyphen.
Examples are: Mother-in-law ,Son-in-law ,Name-calling
