What is World Water Day?
•
Celebrated annually on March 22 by the United Nations, Established by United Nations General Assembly in 1993.
•
Aims to raise awareness about water scarcity, pollution, and sustainable water management.
•
Purpose: Celebrates water's role in global development and sustainability.
•
The 2025 theme focuses on the importance of glaciers in sustaining global water resources.
World Water Day 2025 Theme
"Glacier Preservation" emphasizes critical role of glaciers in the global water cycle and
Key focus areas for 2025:
•
Glaciers are largest freshwater reservoirs on our planet earth 🌍.
•
Climate Change is causing Glacier Retreat
•
Implementing glacier preserving activities on war-footing basis.
Why It Matters?
Preserving glaciers is not just about saving ice—it’s about ensuring water security, preventing
Glaciers are:
•
❄️ Essential freshwater source
•
🌍 It regulates climate
•
🦎 Supports biodiversity
•
⚠️ Prevents natural disasters
•
These Giant Water Towers also act as Giant Coolers
…by reflecting solar radiations,
…by producing cool waters,
…by influencing oceanic water circulation,
…by influencing global climatic conditions that we enjoy on earth,
…by influencing oceanic water circulation,

•
Fresh-water they deliver especially in summer is key
to support life on earth, its also vital to sustain
Agriculture, hydro power and tourism.
•
In some regions glacial depletion will lead to water
scarcity it will impact countless communities even
where people have not seen glaciers with their naked
eyes.
•
We OWE a lot to glaciers they influence shape of the
continent’s they influence distribution of
freshwater and hence… life conditions on earth,
their depletion will contribute to turning current
emerging climate crisis in to the biggest social
migratory economic environmental crisis in history
of humanity….
Just Imagine the impact of sea level rise
on costal cities of the world… Imagine
the conflicts that will arise due to
sudden forced migration of millions of
people over the world… I hope you are
starting to understand why glaciers
preservations are so important to mere
existence of HOMO Sapiens…

Consequences of Glacier
Loss
•
When glacier melts Fresh water goes to the oceans and occupy its

than freshwater, so freshwater takes position at the top.

Now there are circulations in the oceans not only up-down,

And combinations of these circulations creates the stability of the

There are fishes who cant live any more where they used to be

animals might go extinct.
•
Weather patterns will change b’coz oceans affect climate.
The Shrinkage of Arctic Ice
•
The visualization here is a gif showing how the ice in the Arctic cap has diminished in the past twenty years.
•
Icecap melting includes not only the melting of the ice but also the melting of permafrost which also releases
gases into the atmosphere
How We Can Protect Glaciers
• Reducing
Carbon Emissions
• Promoting Renewable energy
• Implement glacier monitoring programs
• Support policies for climate action
• Reduce
Carbon Footprint by using sustainable energy
• Support organizations working for glacier conservation
• Spread awareness about climate change
• Participate in tree planting and water conservation programs
Carbon Emissions
• Carbon Mono-Oxide
• Hydrocarbons
• Carbon-Dioxide
Global Efforts for
Glacier Preservation
• UN’s Sustainable Development
Goals (SDG 6 & 13)
• International agreements like the
Paris Climate Accord
• Scientific research on glacier
preservation
• Community-led conservation
initiatives
Success Stories in Glacier Conservation
• Ice Stupa Project in Ladakh, India.
• Argentina’s Glacier Protection Law.
• Switzerland’s glacier coverage initiatives.
• Global research on artificial glaciers.
Ice Stupa Project in Ladakh, India
• Ice stupa is a form of glacier grafting technique that creates artificial glaciers used for storing winter water in the form of conical-shaped ice heaps.
• The average stupa is 35 meters to 40 meters high and can store up-to 16,000 cubic liters of water which is enough to irrigate 10 hectares of land.
Play your part!
Be part of the global
campaign on ‘Glacier
Preservation’. We need
everyone – from
individuals and families
to companies and
governments – to do what
they can to reduce
global warming and adapt
to shrinking
glaciers. Spread the
word with the UN- Water
material!
