Q) Explain the di erence between the meanings of the words ‘food’ and ‘nutrient’.
Ans) Food is any substance that is consume to provide energy and nourishment to the
body.
Nutrients are the chemical compounds found in that the body uses for various
functions, such as growth and repair. There are six classes of nutrients:
carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water.
Q) Use your knowledge about respiration to explain why a person with anaemia does not have
much energy.
Ans) Anaemia is a condition that develops when your blood produces a lower-thannormal amount of healthy red blood cells. If you have anaemia, your body does not
get enough oxygen-rich blood. The lack of oxygen can make you feel tired or
weak.
7.2 A BALANCED DIET
Q)Explain why sweets and fried foods are at the top of the triangle.
Ans) The Top Shelf includes foods and drinks high in fat, sugar and salt. These
are not needed for good health and should not be consumed every day. Very
small amounts once or twice a week maximum is su cient.
Q)Explain why is it better to eat whole grain bread or brown rice rather than white bread or white
rice.
Ans) Re ned grains like white rice, white pasta and white bread lack the ber and
nutrients that whole grains like brown rice contain.
Q)Suggest how you can get enough protein in your diet, if you don’t like eating meat or sh.
Ans)Cereals and grains, wholegrain breads, rice and pasta have more protein, ber and iron than
white versions. Brown rice with beans, or bread with hummus or nut butter,
can give you as much protein as a piece of meat.
Jack’s favourite meal is a lamb burger and fries, with a sweet milky drink.
Q)What nutrients does he get from his drink?
Ans) Junk foods are full of calories, fat and excess sodium and having it even
once can be bad for your health. For example, a single lamb burger contains
500 calories, 25 grams of fat, 40 grams of carbs, 10 grams of sugar, and
1,000 milligrams of sodium, which is enough to cause havoc in your system.

Ans)He should include vitamins, minerals, and bre in his food.
