Power & Signal Quality TRABTECH Professional surge protection for building installations Avoid damage! Forget your worries and live in comfort with surge protection The unexpected failure of electrical devices can be attributed to the effects of surge voltage more often than you might think. However, thunderstorms (the most dangerous cause of damage) are only the tip of the iceberg. Surge voltages are more often caused by switching operations in power supply networks. This type of mains fault poses a threat to sensitive devices on a daily basis. Safety technology equipment in particular (building control systems, air conditioning systems or fire protection systems, for example) needs to be protected in order to prevent unexpected failures before they can occur. Residential buildings, fire 120,000 20,000 60,000 Household contents, fire 330,000 30,000 60,000 Device failure or defects caused by surge voltage are more frequent than expected. According to the statistics of German insurers GDV, surge voltage is the most frequent cause of damage. These figures only apply to damage that resulted in fire. It starts with a specified arrester in a building's supply or sub-distribution. Important note Only qualified electrically skilled persons or persons specializing in lightning protection are permitted to carry out work on or in electrical equipment. PHoENIx CoNTACT 3 Your route to increased safety Planning surge protection in just a few steps Checking position and location factors Effective lightning and surge protection starts with considering the building. This process can involve assessing the risk of lightning striking or even calculating the local ground resistance. Existing installations such as outdoor lightning arresters or equipotential bonding must also be taken into account. After this, specific installations, devices, and also your personal protection requirements determine the nature and scope of the surge arresters needed. Do remember that the only place to obtain professional surge protective devices for building installation is a specialist electrical company. Seek advice from a specialist electrical company about which protection concept best meets your requirements. This brochure will assist you in selecting the right product. Do T A ac av th A zone requiring protection is imagined as a circuit. This zone can be a building, an application, or even an individual device. The best places in which to install the surge arresters are determined by identifying the points at which the connecting cables and the circuit intersect. Arresters are divided into four protection categories based on application and connection: Power supply Control technology for HVAC equipment Telecommunications Antenna technology Detecting the need for protection The protective circuit principle helps Th 4 PHoENIx CoNTACT Safety for domestic and commercial applications Don't give up your individual domestic comfort Keep in contact and protect your data Keep the production process going The most important element of surge protection is found in the power supply A truly individual protection concept can be created according to the protection circuit principle based on the available connections, devices, and installations. However, the basic structure of this concept always takes the form of multi-stage surge protection in the power supply. At most, a protection concept for the power supply has three protection stages or arrester levels: 1. Protection stage: Lightning arrester (type 1) A powerful type 1 lightning arrester has to be installed if a building is at increased risk of lightning striking due to its location and/or an outdoor lightning protection equipment is present or planned. Talk to your electrical engineer about appropriate risk assessment. • Installation location: incoming supplies and main distributions in front of or behind the meter (dependent upon device type) • Installation by an electrically skilled person 2. Protection stage: Surge protection (type 2) Type 2 arresters provide the basis for every protection concept. They protect any installation against the frequent phenomenon of surge voltages caused by mains faults or switching operations. • Installation location: main or sub-distributions behind the meter • Installation by an electrically skilled person 3. Protection stage: Device protection (type 3) The protection concept is expanded by adding type 3 protective devices. These might take the form of attachment plugs for grounding sockets or adapters for telephone and TV connections. • Installation location: ideally directly upstream of the termination device. • Installation by electrically skilled person (flush-type installation) and user (adapters, attachment plugs) The following pages provide a step-by-step guide to building your own personal protection concept.
