the local ground resistance. Existing

a building, an application, or even an
individual device. The best places in
which to install the surge arresters are
determined by identifying the points at
which the connecting cables and the

The most important element of surge protection is found in the power supply
A truly individual protection concept can be created
according to the protection circuit principle based on the
available connections, devices, and installations. However,
the basic structure of this concept always takes the form
of multi-stage surge protection in the power supply. At
most, a protection concept for the power supply has
three protection stages or arrester levels:
1. Protection stage: Lightning arrester (type 1)
A powerful type 1 lightning arrester has to be installed if a building is at increased risk of
lightning striking due to its location and/or an outdoor lightning protection equipment is
present or planned.
Talk to your electrical engineer about appropriate risk assessment.
• Installation location: incoming supplies and main distributions in front of or behind the meter
(dependent upon device type)
• Installation by an electrically skilled person
2. Protection stage: Surge protection (type 2)
Type 2 arresters provide the basis for every protection concept. They protect any installation against the
frequent phenomenon of surge voltages caused by mains faults or switching operations.
• Installation location: main or sub-distributions behind the meter
• Installation by an electrically skilled person
3. Protection stage: Device protection (type 3)
The protection concept is expanded by adding type 3 protective devices. These might take the form of
attachment plugs for grounding sockets or adapters for telephone and TV connections.
• Installation location: ideally directly upstream of the termination device.
• Installation by electrically skilled person (flush-type installation) and user (adapters, attachment plugs)

Type 1 lightning arrester for Lightning Protection Level I – IV:
A type 1 arrester is strongly recommended for environments in which there is a high risk
of lightning striking, in particular if lightning protection equipment is installed outdoors.
Installation in front of the meter makes it possible to arrest dangerous lightning currents
virtually instantly as they hit the building.
Division of type 1 lightning arresters into Lightning Protection Levels. Type 1 lightning

Basic configuration for building installation
Our set-based solutions provide you with cost-effective entry-level solutions with which you just
cannot go wrong. The surge protection set provides optimum protection against surge voltages.
It is based on a lightning arrester (type 1) which also meets the requirements expected of a surge
arrester (type 2). Three device protection plugs (type 3) protect the socket power connection
of termination devices. Two of these plugs provide additional protection for sensitive consumer
electronics and telephone systems.
The set-based solutions can be expanded at any time by adding more arresters. Additional
set-based versions for buildings are available on request.
