What does true holiness look like in the life of a christian?
The bible is the greatest source of information on how to truly live. Throughout
human history, many lists, qualities and attributes have been prescribed to godly people;
and with God’s call for Christians to be set apart, or holy, many wonder what true
holiness looks like in the life of a Christian? Before answering this question, a definition
of holiness should be written. The term ‘holy’ simply means to be set apart, so when
God calls Christians to ‘holy’ He wants them to live differently then everyone else living
in the world. Christ started His biggest sermon, the sermon on the mount, with a list of
attributes that a person should have in order to gain God’s blessings. These attributes,
now often called the beatitudes, should serve as a nice soft guideline for Christians
wanting to live a life of holiness. These beatitudes, however, are not a hard and fast set
of restrictions that get someone into Heaven, they are a list of things that a saved
Christian should be doing to show that they are saved. When asked what the most
important law in the old testament is, Jesus told them about how Christians should love
God with their whole heart, soul, mind and strength. The second most Important
commandment, Jesus said, was how Christians should love their neighbor as themselves.
So, when a Christian is asking how they can live a life of true holiness, they should
remember that God calls them to love God and love people, and that they can show their
love for God by demonstrating the beatitudes that Christ called blessings.
