TYPES OF SENTENCES
THERE ARE FOUR TYPES OF SENTENCES
• Declarative
• Imperative
• Exclamatory
• Interrogative
DECLARATIVE
Examples
•
Cookies taste good.
•
We didn’t get home until late.
• A declarative sentence makes a
statement.
•
Dolphins can recognize their
reflections.
• It is punctuated by a period (full
stop).
•
The dog in the neighbour’s yard is
barking.
Examples
IMPERATIVE
• An imperative sentence
gives order, commands,
and instructions
• It is usually a command or
a polite request
• It ends in a period or an
exclamation mark.
• The subject is always
“you”
• Be home by midnight.
• Drop the weapon!
• Please be quiet.
• (You,) preheat the oven to
180 degrees.
• Close the door.
Examples
EXCLAMATORY
• An exclamatory sentence
expresses great emotion
or excitement
• It ends in an exclamation
mark
• The robber is escaping!
• The car is headed right for us!
• I can’t believe we won!
• The house is on fire!

INTERROGATIVE
• An interrogative sentence
asks a question
• And it always ends with a
question mark
• Are you going home?
• When is the graduation?
• Why didn’t I take notes?
• Is it raining?
