GROUP 2 SEC 67 PRESERVATION OF ENVIRONMENT FOR HEALTH QUALITY “PROTECTING NATURE TO PROTECT LIVES.” BALCE, SIMOUN RAI BAUTISTA, CHESKA NICOLE LAVAPIE, STEPHEN WILLIAM TUBON, THEREZE LEILA YAP, MARIA IRENE RHEOTORICAL SITUATION AUTHOR The sophomores of nursing students from the Far Eastern University are the authors that highlighted this dire scenario. They are worried about the unhygienic conditions on campus and in the nearby cities of Manila, which put them at great risk for health problems. This goes against what the whole FEU community believes with the goal to encourage healthy living, wellness, and enhancement of society. SETTING We picked Far Easter University-Manila and the nearby areas because of their heavily inhabited surroundings and issues with cleanliness and overall health. AUDIENCE Our target audience includes FEU students, professors, and staff members, as well as the locals who are impacted by these kinds of issues. Whenever granted the opportunity to widen our audience, we might also include the support of municipal officials and healthcare providers who are likewise keen on assisting the public with health-related initiatives. CONTEXT Insufficient hygiene is a growing problem in urban areas near universities, potentially leading to the propagation of infectious illnesses. There are indications that illnesses are becoming more prevalent in the public, necessitating the implementation of preventive strategies. As previously stated, clean-up drives, and outreach programs may be useful strategies for mitigating such dangers. MESSAGE/TEXT Through focusing on the root cause hazards, specifically transmitted illnesses aggravated by filthy situations in the immediate vicinity, they can be safely averted through clean-up initiatives and extensive and wide health awareness. Together with the assistance of fellow students and locals, we can establish an atmosphere of hygiene and consciousness in our neighborhood, reducing the relevance of health concerns. This entails a coordinated effort to improve widely known sanitation and the general excellence of Far Eastern University and nearby towns. INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION Can you envision a world in which the prospect of development is eclipsed by the dire consequences of illnesses and ecological threats? Our country's growth efforts have resulted in a huge contradiction: the unforeseen generation of unclean situations that imperil our well-being. According to the World Bank Group (2023), accelerated economic growth and a rise in population, both qualities of a growing country, placed pressure on the ability of the nation to keep suited to sanitary conditions, resulting in pervasive contaminants and health issues. Different underlying health threats such as transmissible diseases brought by unsanitary environment in a community can be easily prevented by clean-up drives and health education as precautionary health measures. Our country, the Philippines, faces an urgent point in time, requiring immediate intervention to deal with the increasing sewerage issue and protect the safety and well-being of its people. This harm to the environment adversely impacts the least fortunate community members, such as young people and seniors, and those who suffer from impoverishment, worsening present disparities and impeding progress in general (Lu, 2024). Failure to give priority to thorough cleanliness remedies jeopardizes not only the country's environmental sustainability objectives but also leads in achieving in lowering poverty rates and overall wellness. Think about this: will the country of the Philippines tackle its responsibility of creating a fit and viable future for each of its population, or can its promises of growth be supplanted through the mounting sanitary turmoil? Visit Our Location: PROBLEM DESCRIPTION WATER CONTAMINATION Most health issues come from consuming contaminated water supply, which causes many health problems. Due to water contamination, it can cause ranging from acute microbial infections to a more severe chronic disease. According to Martin, J. (2024), the most common health cases due to water contamination are “diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, dysentery, hepatitis, and gastro-enteritis.” Which makes waterborne diseases one of the main reasons for Filipino people to have waterassociated diseases. INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCE WATERBORNE DISEASES ANNUALLY AIR POLLUTION ADULTS DUE TO 66,230 DEATHS AIR POLLUTION 70 00 0 60 00 0 50 00 0 40 00 0 CHILDREN 30 00 0 The most affected individuals when it comes to air pollution are the children, the elderly, and those who have already preceding diseases. According to Myllyvirta et al., (2023), air pollution causes several health problems such as “acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, cardiovascular diseases, premature deaths, and other respiratory diseases”. Which poses air pollution as one of the primary causes of morbidity and disability in the Philippines. With 66,230 deaths recorded in the Philippines due to air pollution, with morbidity estimation of 64,920 for adults, and 1,310 for children. 20 00 0 02 50,000 0 10 00 0 01 PROBLEM DESCRIPTION 03 FLOODING AND NATURAL DISASTERS Since the Philippines is an archipelago, its citizens are more prone to nature disasters such as typhoons and floods, which could cause several health problems to every individual. The common health issues Filipino individual faces due to natural disasters are waterborne diseases such as Hepatitis A, leptospirosis, cholera, and typhoid fever, vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria, skin infections, and foodborne illnesses, which food can be caused by contaminated during floods which causes food poisoning ( Philippine Council for Health Research and Development , 2022). 04 LACK OF PUBLIC AWARENESS According to Hasan (2020), there is a lack of public awareness and education when it comes to preserving a sanitary environment in the country. It is essential to maintain and preserve environmental sanitation as it is the first line of defense against health threats in the community. Unawareness of the importance of environmental preservation can cause severe risk to the increase of exposure to pollutants, which could lead to several health issues. Furthermore, lack of public awareness can also affect the behavior of individuals with regards to maintaining the sanitation of the environment, which causes lack of interest in waste management, and excessive use of plastic materials, which harms the environment. PROBLEM DESCRIPTION 05 INCREASED POPULATION According to Kim et al., (2021), overpopulation in a certain place or community can affect not only the environmental sanitation but also poses health threats to the community. Due to the increased population of a certain community, it causes a higher level of air and water pollution, the primary cause of morbidity cases in the Philippines. As it can cause respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and increase the risk of cancer. Furthermore, overpopulation can cause sanitation problems such as improper waste disposal, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and higher demands for urbanization, which can destroy natural habitat and lead to the loss of biodiversity of wild animals. THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM 01 WATER CONTAMINATION There are many causes of water contamination, one of which is industrial waste. Because Industries and industrial sites worldwide contribute a lot to water contamination, in short, industries throw their trash, toxic chemicals, and other liquids in our water, making it unsafe for drinking. Examples of toxic chemicals here are chemical spills, toxic substances like mercury or pesticides, and runoff from land, like solvents, and oils. 02 AIR POLLUTION Vehicles and industrial emissions are the primary sources of air pollution. Cars, motorcycles, buses, trucks, burn or use fuels, like diesel or gasoline, resulting in these released harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide contributing to the air we’re breathing, can cause serious harm to our health. For Industrial Emissions or factories, they burn fossil fuels, sometimes use chemicals, releasing pollutants like sulfur dioxide, and heavy metals into our atmosphere. These harmful gases from factories and cars can damage the air quality and can cause harm to human health and our environment. THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM 03 FLOODING AND NATURAL DISASTERS Heavy rainfall, Poor Urban planning, and Deforestation are the most focused causes of flooding and Natural disasters in the environment. First, Heavy Rainfall. Intense and long rain or storm surges can fill up rivers and drainage systems, resulting in them overflowing to nearby low-lying places. Second, which is Poor Urban Planning. Cities build a lot of buildings and houses that can cause a blockage to our natural water pathways or fill up wetlands that help nature absorb water. The last one, the top cause of flooding and natural disasters, is deforestation. Trees help nature absorb water, without trees holding the soil together, it can cause erosion that leads to landslides, and most importantly, floods. 04 LACK OF PUBLIC AWARENESS The main reason for a lack in public awareness is a lack of education and information. Many people did not have any access to accessible and accurate up-to-date information about sanitary health. Many regions do not prioritize environmental health, resulting in people not knowing much about public awareness. Another is the Lack of support from the government, or not enough infrastructure for proper sanitation like, proper waste disposal systems, and sewage treatment plants. This results in people not seeing the needs that we need to be more aware or responsible, because they did not see the consequences for improper waste disposal. THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM 05 INCREASED POPULATION Why is Increasing of population a problem to our sanitary environmental conditions? The simplest cause is because of us also. Which means that more waste is generated, overuse of water supplies, and increased air pollution also. All these problems will be doubled because of the increase in population, more people do these things like, the amount of waste generated on each household such as trash and food wastes increase. Demand for water will increase too, for drinking, sanitation and agriculture, as the population grows. And lastly more vehicles and industrial activity will occur, more vehicles and factories mean increased air pollution due to toxic harmful gases produced by those cars and factories. OUR SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES PROPOSED SOLUTIONS These actions are intended solutions to help achieve optimal health quality in the community by raising awareness of environmental preservation and providing attainable solutions to lessen cases of health-associated environmental diseases. HEALTH EDUCATION Effective health education within communities is important for raising public awareness of health risks and diseases, particularly in areas prone to disasters such as flooding and excessive rainfall, which are aggravated by rising population density. These Health Education should focus on spreading awareness of waterborne infections, sanitation practices, and the necessity of cleanliness during and after such events. By offering targeted information and practical skills, communities can better prepare for and manage the health risks associated with environmental issues, creating higher resilience and well-being.
