JDM F22 Coefficient of Friction is 0.14-0.22 regardless of color appearance. 1.3 JDM F22 applies to non-threaded parts and fasteners made of steel such as solid pins, washers, spring pins, and snap rings. 1.4 JDM F22 is not intended for threaded parts due to the potential for embedment of media within the threads as well as the deformation potential of threads. 1.5 JDM F22 is specified in terms of ISO 12683. JDM F22 is a performance specification, allowing the supplier to determine the best composition of the coating to meet the JDM F22 requirements. 1.6 JDM F22 does not specify the surface condition of the base metal prior to coating. 1.7 The friction characteristics of the JDM F22 designations are specified by coefficient of friction. For a critical joint that will be tightened by torque control, it is recommended that a torque/tension study of the actual fastener joint, or a simulation of it, be performed to determine the appropriate tightening torque. This standard can contain mandatory provisions, which are identified by the words “shall” or “required”. Compliance with the mandatory provisions is required to claim conformance with this standard. This standard can also contain guideline provisions, which are generally identified by the words “should” or “recommended”. Compliance with the guideline provisions is not required, because they might not be appropriate for all machines or all applications. 1.8 2 Terms and Definitions For the purposes of JDM F22, the terms and definitions in ISO 12683 and the following apply. 2.1 as processed Supplier provided results of neutral salt spray (NSS) testing of samples collected at the supplier’s manufacturing facility at least 24 hours after conversion coating treatment process. 2.2 as received Neutral salt spray (NSS) testing of samples collected after arrival at John Deere. Note 1 The as-received NSS value takes into account handling degradation of the JDM F22 coating on the part. 2.3 base metal corrosion Visual corrosion of the base metal, often referred to as “red corrosion” or “red rust” on steel fasteners 2.4 colorless conversion coating Conversion coating with the appearance of a transparent, to clear with possible bluish hue, slight iridescence is acceptable. Colorless layer applied such that the underlying coating is seen through the conversion coating on the finished product. 3 JDM F22 APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER DISTRIBUTION 2.5 conversion coating Layer on the surface of the electroplated zinc formed when the exposed zinc surface chemically reacts with a solution and is converted to a chemical compound of the zinc and an anion of the solution to which it has been exposed. 2.6 enterprise standard part Part owned by Enterprise Engineering Standards which does not require a drawing. 2.7 fastener Part that transfers load by joining two or more parts, with or without the use of threads. Note 2 Parts are considered to be fasteners if they are covered by ISO 1891 with the inclusion of snap rings. Examples of fasteners include bolts, screws, nuts, weld nuts, flat washers, spring washers, split pins, and blind rivets. 2.8 non-fastener Part whose function is not primarily for joining two or more parts. Note 3 Parts are considered to be non-fasteners if they are not covered by ISO 1891. Examples of non-fastener parts include tubing, brackets, pulleys, and tie rods. 2.9 sacrificial coating corrosion Visual corrosion of the zinc coating, often referred to as “white corrosion” or “white rust”, which typically occurs prior to base metal corrosion. 2.10 significant surface Surface on which the specified zinc coating thickness applies, includes all surfaces of the part other than screw threads that are normally visible, directly or by reflection, and that can be touched by a 20 mm diameter ball. 2.11 supplementary treatment Any surface treatment, including organic or inorganic sealing agents, applied in addition to the conversion coating in order to enhance corrosion protection or other coating properties. 3 3.1 General Requirements JDM F22 coatings shall be compliant to ISO 12683 with the additions or exclusions of JDM F22. 3.2 Unless otherwise specified, JDM F22 coated parts shall have an ISO 12683 Type 2 supplementary coating finish, except the color appearance shall be colorless or black as designated in JDM F22 Table 2. 3.3 All part dimensions shall apply after coating. 3.4 JDM F22 coatings shall be compliant to JDM H30. The presence of hexavalent chromium shall be tested in accordance with ISO 3613. A statement identifying the part is free from hexavalent chromium (see clause 8) shall be provided during PPAP. 4 JDM F22 APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER DISTRIBUTION 4 Zinc Coating Thickness 4.1 Unless otherwise specified, zinc coating thickness shall be determined by the supplier based on the dimensional and performance requirements of the part, with a minimum coating thickness of 8 µm. The coating thickness shall be adequate to provide the corrosion resistance specified in Table 3. Note 4 8 µm coating thickness is a minimum. The supplier can decide to use additional zinc to increase the thickness in order to meet the performance requirements, as long as dimensional requirements are maintained. 4.2 Significant surfaces shall be visibly coated. Measurements for minimum zinc coating thickness applies to the local thickness at all points on significant surfaces. 4.3 Zinc coating thickness shall be measured by a method listed in ISO 12683. In case of dispute, the method given in ISO 3497 shall be decisive. 4.4 Coating thickness options permitted in prior revisions of JDM F22 are considered not for new design, as shown in Table 1. Table 1 5 JDM F22 Coating Thickness Options ISO Class John Deere Designation Coating Thickness (m) Current Status Zn 40 M(Fe) 5 40 Not for New Design Zn 25 M(Fe) 4 25 Not for New Design Zn 12 M(Fe) 3 12 Not for New Design Zn 8 M(Fe) 2 8 Available Zn 6 M(Fe) 1 6 Not for New Design Zinc Coating Adhesion 5.1 Adhesion of the zinc coating to the base metal shall be such that there is no blistering, lifting or peeling of the zinc coating. 5.2 6 JDM F22 coating adhesion shall be tested in accordance with ISO 12683. Freedom from Hydrogen Embrittlement JDM F22 parts shall be free from hydrogen embrittlement, including springs and other high strength parts subject to flexure. High strength parts are considered 39 HRC or higher. 7 Appearance 7.1 JDM F22 coating appearance shall conform to ISO 12683. 7.2 JDM F22 limits the color appearance options to colorless or black as indicated in clause 8.3. Note 5 Black is not recommended for new designs due to the convention of black color indicating low coefficient of friction and JDM F22 is high coefficient of friction. Additionally, the black mechanical plating has poor aesthetic appearance. 5 JDM F22 8 APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER DISTRIBUTION Conversion Coating 8.1 Parts with an “A” designation shall be colorless and shall not contain hexavalent chromium. 8.2 Parts with an “E” designation shall be black color and shall not contain hexavalent chromium. 8.3 Table 2 shows the conversion coatings permitted by JDM F22. Table 2 9 Conversion Coatings Permitted by JDM F22 Designation Color Appearance Description A Colorless E Black (Not for New Design) Corrosion Protection 9.1 All tests, including accelerated corrosion testing, shall be carried out at least 24 hours after conversion coating treatment process. 9.2 Unless otherwise specified, the significant surfaces shall show neither sacrificial coating corrosion products (except at corners or edges) nor base metal corrosion at the end of continuous neutral salt spray according to ISO 9227 or ASTM B117 for the respective test times specified in Table 3 when inspected with the unaided eye at normal reading distance. 9.3 Unless otherwise specified, only those surfaces of the part that are positioned in the test chamber in accordance with the specified test method are pertinent for evaluating results. 9.4 Each lot of JDM F22 parts shall meet or exceed the As Processed NSS corrosion protection requirements in Table 3.
