Quick Exit Ticket (Digitally Enhanced with Mentimeter)
By Wilson Kabala
A Quick Exit Ticket is a brief, targeted activity used in the final minutes of a lesson to assess student
understanding of the day’s key concept. It provides real-time feedback that helps teachers adjust future
instruction, clarify misunderstandings, and ensure that all students are staying on track.
Time Needed
3–5 minutes at the end of class
2–3 minutes to scan results and identify trends post-class
Tools
Mentimeter (ideal for real-time digital submissions)
Alternative digital tools: Google Forms, Padlet
For analog options: sticky notes, index cards, or half-sheets of paper
How to Use It
⚫ Display a Clear Grammar Prompt
Share a concise question or sentence task via Mentimeter. Focus on the day’s grammar point. Examples:
1. “Write a sentence using was and were correctly.”
2. “Choose the correct form: He (was/were) tired yesterday.”
3. “Identify and fix the error: They was at school yesterday.”
4. “Write your own question using did.”
⚫ Collect Responses Digitally
Students respond using their devices. Use Mentimeter’s open-ended question type for written responses
or multiple choice to check rule application.
⚫ Quick Review and Feedback
Scan responses immediately to spot trends:
1. Address common errors in the next class or as a warm-up
2. Highlight accurate usage
3. Save responses as informal data to track grammar development over time
Modification
To support diverse learners, adapt your grammar-focused Exit Ticket prompts in the following ways:
1. For Emerging English Learners: Provide sentence frames to guide structure and reduce cognitive load.
2. For Intermediate/Advanced Learners: Prompt students to explain grammar rules or analyze sentence
errors.
3. For Visual Learners: Include images or icons in your Mentimeter prompt (e.g., a picture of a classroom
with a caption: “Describe this using there was/there were.”)
4. For Digital Classrooms: Use Mentimeter’s interactive features (e.g., ranking, scales, multiple choice)
to support varied response formats and engagement levels.
Extensions & Enhancements
⚫ Use Mentimeter’s color scale or multiple-choice for quick self-assessment (e.g., “How confident are you
with today’s topic?”)
⚫ Review a few anonymous responses as a class the next day to spark discussion or reinforce concepts
⚫ Store digital Exit Tickets to track growth over time
