SECTION A: ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN ACHIEVING THE SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT GOALS
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 2- ZERO HUNGER
INTRODUCTION
Background
Global goal 2- zero hunger is the second sustainable development goal of the 17
sustainable goals adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 2015 to ensure the better
development for humanity which is aimed to be achieved by 2030. The official wording
is “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable
agriculture” (Wikipedia n.d).
Motivation
The reason I have chosen this sustainable development goal is because it embodies
one of the most crucial aspects people depend on. I too have done the “live below the
line of the global poverty project” (Social Media, Development and Governance.pdf) and
tried to live on 1 euro (equivalent to 20,35 rands) and have seen how challenging it is to
live just on that daily. On this SDG we can see how crucial food security is and how
everyone requires proper food security to live.
BODY
How Social Media Platform Contribute Toward Promoting Zero Hunger
Social media platforms also help fill in the gap through the following:
”X, formally known as twitter, is the one of the most used social media platforms around
the world, with as of April 2025, 611 million people, actively use X” (Shubham
Singh/May 17, 2025). When people regularly post(tweet) on X they can engage and
promote zero hunger by using #hashtag which is a known method on social media of
letting people know about current trends. X contributes to helping end hunger by
allowing people to share their views and opinions on how to end world hunger through
tweets and people actively engaging in the comment section.
Facebook is another social media platform that can promote SDG 2. People can create
live videos where they help promote zero hunger. Facebook is also a social media
platform well known for having community groups where people who are interested in
joining zero hunger group can actively engage and help make a difference.
Influencers, Campaigns and Organizations Use Social Media to Drive Change
Influencers, campaigns and organizations also use social media to promote zero
hunger. An example is influencer and chef Elijah Amoo Addo, a Ghanaian chef and food
stylist. Elijah uses social media platforms such as Instagram to motivate and empower
people to fight against food insecurity. On July 24, 2024, chef Elijah posted about
having an Empty plates Activation part of hungry for action, the campaign to end the
global crisis.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 5- GENDER EQUALITY
INTRODUCTION
Background
Gender equality is the fifth sustainable development goal established by the UN. This
was made with the aim of ending discrimination against women and girls, putting an end
to all forms of violence against women and girls, ending forced marriage and ensuring
men and women have equal rights including in the workplace by 2030.
Motivation
We live in a world where there is the word “equality”, but we are not all equal. That is the
reason I chose SDG 5 as it promotes equality and fairness amongst genders (male and
female) and strives for the best interest of everyone. In the economy we live we know
that violence against woman is common, trafficking and sexual exploitation which needs
to end as it strips females and girls of their rights.
How Social Media Platform Contribute Toward Promoting Gender Equality
Through Facebook, X, Instagram people can stand against inequality against women.
Female victims can be able to share their experiences with other female victims through
social media platforms which creates awareness, allows other females to learn about
their rights and, also show them that they have support from other people. Social media
using #hashtag has also been used in GBV situations to help victims of gender-based
violence. From posts made about gender inequality people can stand together through
marches and raise gender inequality issues to help reduce inequality.
Influencers, Campaigns and Organisations Use Social Media to Drive Change
The United Nations also has a campaign called “HeForShe” which welcomes men and
boys to advocate for gender equality. Actress Emma Watson who was appointed as
Goodwill Ambassador for UN gave a speech at the United Nations which boosted the
campaign visibility to over 1.1 million tweets (Yalsinkaya,2014).
CONCLUSION
From various aspects it is quite often seen that digital activism plays a crucial role in
raising awareness. From SDG 2 we can see that from using social media platforms
such as X to tweet about ending world hunger alerts and informing others to help and
support that goal. People from everywhere who use X and other social media platforms
engage through the comment section and can share thoughts and ideas about
improving the goal which benefits everyone.
SECTION B: CREATE A SOCIAL MEDIA AWARENESS POST
SECTION C: SELF REFLECTION
The message I am trying to convey
With this poster I am trying to inform people about how crucial SDG 2 is. As stated in
the poster, millions of people experience malnutrition every year. I am trying to inform
people that we need to take a stand against this and help each other, that as the
number of people who go hungry increases our number as united people who fight
against this should also increase.
Inspiration for SDG2
After doing the “live below the line” I was inspired to choose this specific SDG. It was
very challenging as I was trying to live on R20 daily. My challenge started on Monday.
On that day I used R20 to buy bread at the local supermarket as it has carbohydrates. It
was baked bread, so it cost about R11. With R8 I bought a small bottle of water and was
left with R3. The following day I had half of the bread left and spent R20 on that day. On
Tuesday I bought potatoes and tomatoes to make gravy that’s mixed with boiled
potatoes to eat with bread. The bread only lasted for two days as I was eating it for
breakfast, lunch and supper. Wednesday, I used R20 to buy onions and carrots to mix
with the gravy and potatoes. On Thursday I bought bread with water as I did on the first
day of my challenge. On the last day of the challenge, I bought eggs which cost about
R20 in my local supermarket.
Now one may read this and think that I have been living off fine with just R20 daily
which is not necessarily true, the human body daily needs a balance of protein, carbs,
vitamins, fats and water. My diet mostly consists of carbs, protein and water and lacks
vitamins and fats. So, during this challenge looking at the food I need to eat to live, not
things like sambas, biscuits and all that, but in my local area that is all R20 can get me
from what I found so far.
Target Audience
My target audience for this post is for people who are willing to help with donating and
helping homeless shelters with food distribution and other people who experience
hunger daily. The target audience are also companies which are willing to donate and
support SDG 2 to end hunger and ensure that the goal is accomplished by the year
2030.
How I think my post would influence the target audience
I think my post would influence the audience to discuss more on the SDG 2 on social
media platforms, checking how far the goal is to being accomplished and being aware
of the status of zero hunger in each country
