What is SAFe?
▪ SAFe is a framework for scaling Agile
principles and practices across large
enterprises, enabling multiple teams to work
cohesively on complex projects, roadmaps,
and programs.
▪ Scaling agile practices allows companies to
align, collaborate, and deliver work across
multiple Agile teams, ensuring that largescale projects remain efficient and
manageable.
▪ Grounded in the basic agile principles, SAFe
layers its own principles for achieving
business agility:

Dedicated Roles
Agile Team: This is a cross-functional team responsible for delivering value. It consists of 5-11 individuals who work
together to develop and deliver the product or solution.
Scrum Master: The Scrum Master is a servant leader who facilitates the Agile Team's progress. They help remove
any obstacles, promote continuous improvement, and ensure adherence to agile principles and practices.
Product Owner: The Product Owner represents the customer or stakeholder and is responsible for defining and
prioritizing the product backlog. They work closely with the Agile Team to ensure that the right features are developed
and delivered.
System Architect/Engineer: This role focuses on the technical aspects of the solution. They provide architectural
guidance, ensure technical integrity, and support the Agile Teams in implementing the solution.

Overcoming Scaling Challenges
Alignment Across Silos
Resistance to Change
Maintaining Agility
Coordinating work between
different departments and teams
can be challenging. SAFe's
defined roles and processes
help provide structure.
Scaling agile requires a cultural
shift. Start small, demonstrate
successes, and gradually
expand adoption.
SAFe's processes can feel more
rigid than pure agile. Balance
structure with flexibility to
preserve the benefits of agile.

Scaling Agile at the Team Level
▪ Start small. Even without full organizational
adoption, teams can begin implementing
SAFe elements like quarterly planning and
cross-team alignment.
▪ Avoid prescribing the framework, and instead
use scaling Agile as an opportunity for teams
to grow and learn together. Try new things
and see what benefits can be reaped crossfunctionally.
▪ Regularly collect feedback from stakeholders
and team members and adjust accordingly.
▪ Gain leadership support: Communicate the
benefits of scaling agile and get buy-in from
leadership to involve other teams as you
progress.
