SPEECH FOR VICTORIA UNIVERSITY PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE
DELIVERED DURING THE OPEN CAMPAIGNS, MAY 27, 2025.
VICTORIA UNIVERSITY'S MAIN CAMPUS AUDITORIUM
THEME:” YOUR VOICE. YOUR POWER. OUR FUTURE.”
OPENING STATEMENT
Your Excellency, the Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, Retired Major Jessica Rose Epel
Alupo;
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Honorable Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi;
Our esteemed Vice Chancellor, Dr. Lawrence Muganga;
Distinguished members of the academic and administrative leadership of Victoria University;
Fellow students;
Honored guests;
Good evening.
I am Collin Karuhanga, a first year student pursuing a degree in Human Resource Management,
it’s a great honor and privilege to stand before you today as the candidate nominated by my peers
to represent Victoria University in Parliament. Today, I speak not only as candidate, but as a
fellow young Ugandan, a brother, a friend, someone who understands our dreams, our struggles,
and our hunger for better future but also as a representative of our university's lively,
imaginative, and determined community. Together, we are more than just an institution; we are a
movement of promise, purpose, and growth.
Everywhere in the world, from bustling cities to rural villages; students wake up each day
chasing a dream, believing that education will unlock doors to opportunity. Yet for far too many,
that dream is met with roadblocks: the struggle for quality education, the uncertainty of
employment, and the feeling that their voices go unheard.
I have seen students pour their hearts into learning, only to graduate into a system that does not
guarantee them a place. I have witnessed the frustration of young minds with potential but
without access to resources. And I have stood with peers who, despite their talents, worry about a
future where qualifications do not always translate into opportunity.
But let me be clear: This is not a story of despair. It is a call to action.
The time has come for students, for youth, for dreamers everywhere; not just in Victoria
University, not just in Uganda, and Africa, but across the world to demand better. To push for
policies that ensure education is not a privilege but a right. To fight for a system where skills
meet opportunity, where innovation is encouraged, and where leadership recognizes the power
This campaign isn’t about fancy posters or empty slogans. It’s about fellow students that have
completed their courses but have nowhere to work, practice their skills, enrich their abilities and
knowledge, the continuing students struggling with tuition fees balances, surviving on handouts,
fainting due to hunger, using drugs due to over load of work, desire to fit in society, out of
anxiety and neglect by a system that’s supposed to protect us, We’ve all faced these struggles.
But today, we say: Enough is enough.
VISION AND PURPOSE
Victoria University like other institutions is more than just a place to learn. It serves as a starting
point for innovators, builders, and visionaries. As we fight for a seat at the national table, we
must ask ourselves, "What future are we creating?"
I envision a world in which our voices shape national policies.
A future in which students actively contribute to Uganda's success rather than passively see it.
A future in which Victoria University leads the way not only in academics but also in innovation,
research, and leadership in Africa and beyond.
That is the future I am working for. And I invite you to fight beside me.
KEY ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS
As we look ahead, there are significant concerns that require courageous leadership and realistic
solutions and if elected as your MP, I commit to champion the following:
Student representation and academic advocacy: I will guarantee that student concerns
about curriculum reform and research funding are brought to Parliament with urgency
and purpose. You deserve to be heard.
Innovation and professional development: Education must lead to opportunities. I will
lobby for increased internships, practical training, and university-industry collaborations
to close the gap between education and employment.
Infrastructure and digital access: We require modern learning settings, as well as a
digital ecosystem that facilitates distant and hybrid learning. I will advocate for increased
investment in ICT infrastructure and legislative changes that promote 21st-century
education.
Mental health and student well-being: We cannot thrive if we remain silent. I will
prioritize mental health services and awareness campaigns to guarantee that no student is
alone on their academic journey.
Leadership and experience: I am not here by chance. I have served, listened, and led.
Throughout my leadership roles, I have worked on programs that empowered youths,
solved problems, and made a difference.
What sets me apart is not only what I have accomplished, but how I did it with integrity,
compassion, and dedication. I have learned to listen with empathy, speak boldly, and act with
purpose, all of which I will bring to Parliament as your representative.
MY COMMITMENT TO YOU
I pledge to remain actively engaged beyond the elections.
I will not remain silent while the voices of our youth are ignored.
I will not be a leader who speaks in one language and forgets the diversity of voices at Victoria
University.
I will be present, I will speak up, and I will remain accountable.
I will carry your hopes, your ideas, and your voices into the halls of Parliament.
CALL TO ACTION
Fellow youth, this is our moment.
We must not wait for permission, nor be silenced by intimidation.
Let us rise, speak, and vote not just for ourselves, but for leadership that truly understands us.
Vote for energy, for ideas, for action.
I humbly ask for your support and your vote on Election Day.
Vote for creativity, vision, and bold ideals that reflect the potential of every student.
Together, we can show the country and the world what a united, visionary student body can
accomplish when given the chance to lead.
As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to
change the world." Let’s use it wisely.
Today, I ask not only for your vote, I ask for your belief:
Belief in a future where student voices shape decisions.
Belief in a Victoria University that leads in national conversations.
Belief in what we can achieve together.
As one of my favorite leaders said, “Leadership is not about position; it is about action.”
I am Collin Karuhanga, your preferred candidate.
YOUR VOICE. YOUR POWER. OUR FUTURE.
Thank you
Together, let’s create history.
