SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT OF THE 19TH CENTURY PHILIPPINES
Catholicism became more widespread, leading for it to become the main focus of
the academics that time. It also influenced the culture, beliefs, and lifestyle of
Filipinos that time.
In the 19th century Philippines, social hierarchy was prevalent, with three
categories: Highest, Middle, and Lowest. Spanish blood was ranked higher, native
elites in the middle, and the rest in the Lowest. This led to injustices and a rigid
justice system.
Racial Discrimination became widespread, just like the social class, the European
Decent living in the Philippines is the dominant race, and the discrimination against
the natives and mixed race ancestry.
INFANCY AND FAMILY BACKGROUND
His mother almost died while giving birth to him due to his big head.
He was named after two saints.
He grew up in a middle-class family, they belong to the Principalia Class.
His Father- Don Francisco Mercado-was a Gobernadorcillo.
Her Mother-Doña Teodora Alonso-was said to be related to Lakan-Dula who was the
last native king of Tondo.
CHILDHOOD
His earliest childhood memories are full of religious practices such as Angelus
Prayer and nightly rosary. In fact, at the age of three his mother taught him the
catholoci prayers and soon become part of the routine of family prayer sessions.
Rizal was intrigued in magic. With his nimble hands, he acquired a variety of feats,
including making a penny appear or disappear in his finger and a handkerchief
vanish in thin air.
His mother was his first educator, and according to Jose, his mother is well-versed
in literature and is more fluent in speaking Spanish.

Rizal learned both alphabet and prayer at the age of three.
She is patient, conscientious and understanding.
She discovered her son’s talent for poetry, and encouraged him to do
more to stimulate his imagination and his memorization of ABCs.

Former classmate of Don Francisco Mercado and lived at the ancestral
house of the Rizals.
He instructed Latin and Spanish.
Unfortunately, he died five months later.
PRIVATE SCHOOL IN BIÑAN
Longest a Year and A Half
After Monroy’s passing, Jose’s parents decided to send him to Biñan for
further studies. He stayed at his aunt’s house, and he is depressed.
Paciano introduced him to MAESTRO JUSTINIANO AQUINO CRUZ on his first
day.
The students where laughing at him due to his scarce knowledge of Latin and
Spanish.
On his first day, he challenged on of his bully on a wrestling, Pepe defeated
his bully due to his knowledge of wrestling from his Tio Manuel. On the next
succeeding days, he had a lot of fights , he never ran away from it.
He live a very productive life he is only focused on both church and studying.
He is excellent in academics, he surpassed his classmates in Spanish, Latin
and othe subjects. This resulted jealousy on the part of his classmates.
After a year and a half, he came back to Calamba.

JOSE’S LOVE FOR PAINTING
Rizal loves painting.
The father-in-law of his school teacher named Juancho, has a painting
studio. He gave him lessons in drawing and painting. He is also impressed
by Pepe’s artistic talent.
