SAHYADRI SCHOOL KFI
Guidelines to be followed by Parents and Students during
Excursions
Preamble
Sahyadri School routinely organises excursions outside the school for students of classes 5, 7, 9 and
11 on an annual basis to augment their learning with experiential learning. Excursions to places with
relevance to nature, history, social work, industry, etc., are organised across the country. The school
deals with known organisations of proven capabilities while considering these excursions, keeping
in mind the safety of students and escorts, and the anticipated learning from the excursions. Teachers
selected for escorting the students are well-prepared for handling students for outdoor movements.
Preparations and efforts are made by the school to make the excursion a good learning experience
for each student. However, given the outdoor nature of an excursion, it is important to note that not
all factors are in the hands of organisers. Therefore, it is very important that parents and students
scrupulously follow the guidelines listed below to make the excursion a safe learning experience.
These have been prepared with cumulative experience of school excursions.
1. Parents (and also friends and relatives) are not permitted to meet their children during travel
or at the place of stay unless required by the school or with special prior permission. Such
visits tend to create excitement for a few and disturb the atmosphere of the trip.
2. Parents must not give any of the following to students at the start of the trip or at intervening
stations during the trip: (a) food items and drinks; (b) cameras and electronic devices
including mobiles and iPads; (c) cash and ATM cards.
3. Parents must ensure that their children have all the necessary items (including an extra pair
of spectacles, inhalers or any specific medical requirements, sleeping bag) for the trip.
4. Students do not get ‘call-chits’ during the excursion. Parents must not contact escorts during
the trip. In case of emergency, the school will contact the parents.
5. Students are expected to conduct themselves as they do while at school.
a. Students should aid the teachers in conducting the excursion and not attempt to get
into any mischief.
b. Students should refrain from using excursions to spend excessive and exclusive time
with particular individuals of the opposite gender.
c. Physical intimacy of any nature is completely discouraged.
d. If a student(s) is found to violate the expected norms, it could result in his/her being
sent back to the school.
6. Students need to remain alert during travel and stay free of trouble. They should not give an
impression of being careless and casual, and they need to behave in a manner appropriate to
public spaces, respecting the ambience of the places they will be visiting.
7. Students should not indulge in conversations with strangers (including bus drivers and
conductors, cleaning staff, co-passengers, vendors).
8. Both during travel and at their place of stay, students must remain in groups and not wander
off by themselves, even while going to the washrooms.
9. Students are not allowed to stand at the doors of trains or to get out of the train at stations.
They should also not go to other coaches without prior permission from the lead escort.
10. Students are not allowed to purchase food items or any articles from vendors on the train,
intervening stations or elsewhere. (Purchases, if any, will be made by the escorts.)
11. During bus or train travel, students seated at the window seat must not stick their hands out,
or their heads.
12. Students must dress appropriately to protect themselves from extreme weather conditions.
As they are travelling to remote areas, shorts are generally not permitted so as to align with
the ethos of the place.
13. Students should not plan on leaving or joining the trip mid-way.
14. Students are forbidden to enter water bodies of any kind whatsoever, at any point
during the excursion.
