Intelligent technologies for distance learning in times of crisis. Lessons learned
from Covid-19 Pandemic
The Covid-19 pandemic has profoundly affected higher education,
compelling institutions worldwide to rapid transition to distance learning. This
presentation examines the intelligent technologies employed during this crisis and
addresses significant challenges highlighted in the scientific literature, particularly
the digital divide and digital phobia among educators. A comprehensive review of
existing research reveals that while technology offers remarkable potential for
remote teaching, socio-economic disparities have created barriers to access, leaving
many students at a disadvantage.
To gain further insights into the adaptation of teaching methodologies, a
survey was conducted among lecturers of Zhaoqing University (People’s republic of
China) and the Industrial University of Tyumen (Russia Federation). This survey
aimed to assess their experiences with digital teaching tools and the development of
digital competencies since the onset of the pandemic. Results indicated that while a
substantial number of educators embraced online technologies, many reported
lacking adequate training and support, underscoring the prevalence of digital
phobia—a reluctance to adopt new technological tools due to fear or apprehension.
The analysis of these findings illustrates critical gaps in professional
development and training for educators, exacerbated by the urgency of the
pandemic. By identifying these barriers, this presentation highlights the urgent need
for targeted interventions to foster digital literacy and ease the transition to digital
pedagogy.
