Perennialism
-This is an educational theory that calls for
adherence to absolute principles. This is
directly in contrast to the progressive theory
to emphasize on change and novelty.
Fundamental principles governing perennialism as a theory, and these are:
 Despite the various and diversity in the environment, human nature
remains the same everywhere; and therefore, education should be
the same for everybody.
 Since rationality is the state of being rational-the highest attribute
that a man possesses, he must use it to direct his instinctive nature
in accordance with deliberately chosen ends.

goodness and truth

 Education is a preparation for life.
 The
student should be taught certain basic subjects that will
acquaint and equip him with knowledge to understand the world
better.
 Students
should study the greatest works of literature, history,
philosophy, the humanities and science in which men, through the
ages, have revealed their lofty aspirations and achievement.
 Perennial means “everlasting”, like a perennial flower that comes up
year after year.
 This
philosophy of education argues that despite differing
environments, human nature remains the same everywhere; hence
education should be the same for everyone.
 According to perennialist, when students are immersed in the study
of those profound and enduring ideas, they will appreciate learning
for its own sake and become true intellectuals.
 The great books of ancient and medieval as well as modern times
are a repository of knowledge and wisdom, a tradition of culture,
which must be initiate each generation.
 As Plato might claim, by neglecting the students-reasoning skills,
we deprive them of the ability to use their “higher” faculties to
control their “lower” ones.
 Perrenialists suggest that a greater emphasis be place on teacher-
guided seminars, where students and teachers engage in Socratic
dialogues, or mutual inquiry sessions, to develop an enhance
understanding of history’s most timeless concepts.
