THE BIG
BANG
THEORY
A Journey through the
formation of the universe as
we know it.

THE BEGINNING
Approximately 13.8 billion years ago,
before even the existence of time.
Starting with a singularity, an infinitely
small, and dense point in less than a
fraction of a second began to expand at a
rate faster than that of light.
That expansion is the bedrock of our
universe and everything in it.
THE EVIDENCE
Supporting the theory
Three primary components prove the theory.
Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB): CMB is faint
radiation left over from the early universe,
comparable to crumbs or baby photos.
Red shift of galaxies: The movement of galaxies
away from us
Abundance of light elements (Hydrogen and helium):
we observe the predicted amounts of light elements
formed in the first few minutes
THE EXPANSION OF SPACE
Space expands at a rate of 70
kilometers per megaparsec.
The expansion of space does not expand at
a linear rate like that of the speed of light.
Instead for every megaparsec of space
covered space expands 70 km/s in other
words places near by won’t disappear.
WHAT IS A
MEGAPARSEC?
Why use megaparsecs?
A megaparsec (Mpc) is a unit of distance commonly
Because galaxies and clusters are
used in astronomy to measure extremely large-scale
millions of light-years apart,
structures, like the distances between galaxies.
astronomers use Mpc to keep
numbers manageable. For example:
1 parsec (pc):
The Andromeda Galaxy is ~0.78
= 3.26 light-years
Mpc from us.
= About 31 trillion kilometers (19 trillion miles)
The Virgo Cluster is ~16.5 Mpc
away.
1 megaparsec (Mpc):
The observable universe is about
= 1 million parsecs
14,000 Mpc across.
= 3.26 million light-years
Want a simple visual comparing
= About 30.9 quintillion kilometers (3.09 × 10²² meters) parsecs, light-years, and
megaparsecs?
WHEN DO WE START
LOSING SIGHT OF PLANETS?
The Speed of light is Now let us rearrange the law to
d = v / H0
299,792 km/h
Space expands at a
rate of 70 km per
megaparsec
Using hubbles law which
states
v = H0x d
