PARENTING
Parenting is like flying a kite …You need to hold the string but loose enough to let it fly and soar high
in the sky. If you hold too tight it will not be able to fly and will not reach great heights and on the
other hand if don’t hold it firmly chances are it might fall down. So it’s all about striking a balance
1. Model the behaviour you expect from them
2. Listen actively but not say Yes to everything
3. Be empathetic but firm
4. Express care and concern but don’t pamper/ spoil them
5.
6.
7.
8.
Correct them using logical consequences
Provide them but not over indulge. Delay gratification
Understand their thoughts, feelings and ideas before you come to a conclusion
Have expectations but keep them reasonable based on their capabilities
9. Accept your mistakes and don’t hesitate to apologise
10. Model respect to others especially elderly people
11. Treat them the way you would treat your friend or colleague especially teenagers
12. Give them space but make sure you have entry into it
13. Give them choices and encourage them to take their decisions
14. Negotiate with them when there is a difference of opinion
15. Monitor but don’t police them
16. Don’t use blame, threat or bribe to correct them
