Rockwool material is having good property of sound absorption so it is used for Acoustic insulation purpose Type of Rockwool material and its use Type Description Use Rockwool Blanket (ASTM C592) Rockwool Wire mesh Blankets are lightly bonded mats stitched to a galvanized hexagonal wire mesh. Used as Hot / Acoustic insulation material for Piping / Tanks / Equipment / irregular counters. (It is flexible and easy to use). Rockwool Board (ASTM C-612) Rockwool board insulation is a semi-rigid board insulation. Used as Hot / Acoustic insulation material for Tanks / Equipment. Rockwool Pipe section (ASTM C-547) Rockwool pipe insulation is a rigid, preformed insulation. Used as Hot / Acoustic insulation material for Piping. Picture Cape plc © 2010 16 Base Insulation Material Foam Glass / Cellular Glass: Foam Glass / Cellular Glass insulation is a lightweight, rigid insulating material composed of millions of completely sealed glass cells, each an insulating space. This allglass, closed-cell structure provides an unmatched combination of physical properties ideal for piping and equipment above ground, as well as underground, indoors or outdoors. Foam Glass / Cellular Glass has good resistance to high temperature so it can be used as fire protection material. Picture Cape plc © 2010 17 Base Insulation Material Polyisocyanurate and Polyurethane Polyisocyanurate (called “polyiso”) is a rigid foam-board insulation material used for Cold insulation service. Polyurethane is in a foam insulation used for in-situ injection of valve and flanges used for Cold insulation service. Cape plc © 2010 30 MATERIAL STORAGE Storage and Material Handling • Insulation materials shall be handled and stored in accordance with the manufacturer’s printed recommendations. • Insulation materials shall be stored in a way that it is protected from exposure to weather e.g. Heat, rain, dirt, etc. • Insulation material shall be protected from getting wet and getting in contact with chemicals and other flammable substances during storage. • Insulation materials shall be kept on pallet / off the ground surface (direct contact of insulation material to ground surface shall be avoided). • The temperature controlled materials shall be stored under well ventilated and within permissible range of temperature as per manufacturer’s product data sheet. Microsoft Offic Excel Workshee Cape plc © 2010 34 APPLICATION Surface Preparation • Surfaces to be insulated shall be clean, dry and free from grease, dirt, loose rust and scale. • Cotton rugs may be used for cleaning of surface to be insulated. • It shall be assured that the if the surface requires coating, all coating shall be present prior to installation of insulation. Cape plc © 2010 36 Insulation Application General: • Pipe section or Blanket can be used for installation of insulation on piping. • Insulation shall be applied starting with full-length piece and half-length piece so as to stagger the circumferential joints. • Blanket or Board shall be used for installation of insulation on equipments. Piping Insulation 1: Preformed pipe insulation; 2: Insulation staggered joints; 3: Insulation fastening; 4: Jacketing; 5: Jacketing fastening Staggered Joints • When more than one layer is employed, the joints in the next layer shall not coincide with the joints of previous layer. Equipment Insulation Cape plc © 2010 37 Insulation Application General: • Insulation joints of pipes / equipment shall be butted together for Hot insulation service. • Insulation joints of pipes / equipment shall be butted together with sealant for Cold insulation service. • Insulation on vertical piping and equipment shall be supported by support ring. • Insulation support shall be provided above all flanged connection, Valve, Bends and Tees. • Tie wire or bands shall be used to secure insulation on pipes. According to PIP Specification • Insulation up to 300mm OD shall be secure by tie wire or fiber glass tape (Fiber glass tape shall be used for securement of rigid material like Cellular glass or Calcium Silicate). • Insulation having OD more than 300 mm can be secured by bands. • Spacing of bands / tie wire shall be (250 mm - 300mm) as shown below. Securement of Single Layer insulation (Piping) Securement of Double Layer insulation (Piping) Securement of insulation (Equipment) Cape plc © 2010 38 Insulation Application General: Elbows, bends and tees • Mitered segments or preformed pipe section can be used for insulation of bends and tees. • Insulation for elbows, bends and tees shall be neatly cut and pre fabricated from straight pipe covers either by band saw machine or manually at site according to the radius of bend and the same shall be joined by adhesive. • The joints of the elbows, bends and tees shall be double finished. Cape plc © 2010 52 Insulation Application Acoustic Insulation: • Acoustic insulation shall be done same as hot / cold insulation. • In cold-acoustic insulation, first cold insulation with vapor barrier shall be applied and acoustic insulation shall be applied thereafter prior to applying jacketing, where as insulation in hot-acoustic insulation, first hot insulation shall be applied followed by acoustic insulation. • Sound barrier (Mass loaded vinyl sheet) shall be applied over hot / cold insulation. • At location were metal to metal contact occur, anti vibration seal shall be applied. Cape plc © 2010 56 Jacketing Application Jacketing for Pipe, elbows and bends • Jacketing on insulation shall be secured by bands, screws and rivets. • Banding on jacket shall be spaced maximum at ~300mm centers. • Where securement of jacketing on insulation is not possible by band, screws or rivet shall be used for securement of jacketing at 150mm centers. • Mitered jacketing sheet shall be use for jacketing on elbows, bends which shall be secured using bands ,tie wire, screws or rivet. Cape plc © 2010 58 Jacketing Application • Cladding of horizontal piping should be fixed in position such that to shed water (1 o Clock or 4 o Clock position). • The joint sealant shall be applied on all circumferential joint on horizontal pipe jacketing and shall be applied on longitudinal joints on vertical pipe jacketing. • Sealant shall be applied on overlap joints of metal jackets to minimum thickness of 3mm. Vertical lap on vertical equipment shall be secured with screws or rivets on 150mm centers. • Edges of Insulation openings such as around flanges, cutouts, pipe supports and other attachments shall be sealed with metal sealant. • Exposed edges of metal jacketing shall be machinebent or rolled to eliminate sharp edges. • Cladding should be cleaned of any mastic stains after completion of work. • Band securing equipment insulation jacketing shall be incorporated with compression type expansion spring. Cape plc © 2010 60 Jacketing Application • Screws to be used shall be self-drilling SS 304 type; No. 8 by 13mm with washers. • Weather jacketing secured with bands on lines/ equipments 18’’ to 24’’ diameter shall be applied with three S-clips & three J-clips. • Weather jacketing secured with bands on lines / equipments above 24’’ diameter shall be applied with four S-clips & four J-clips. Slip joint • Removable / reusable insulation cover shall be lined with rockwool blanket. • Rest all gaps shall be filled with loose wool or blanket. Cape plc © 2010 64 INSPECTION Cape plc © 2010 Inspection of Installed Insulation • Make sufficient check to verify that the materials being applied are the same as the specified approved drawing / approved materials. • Verify that insulation segments are properly staggered. • Verify that the insulation surface is uniform without gaps and voids. For Hot insulation, cracks, voids and gaps greater than 3mm shall be refitted not filled. Those 3mm and less shall be filled with suitable fibrous loose fill material. Crack, voids and gaps shall not be permitted for Cold insulation. • Verify the proper distance of bands as specified. • Verify that the vapor barrier mastic application for cold insulation is having smooth finish and uniform thickness. • Inspect tightness of joints and fasteners. • Verify that the expansion joints/contraction joints are applied properly. Cape plc © 2010 66 Inspection of Installed Jacketing • Verify that the insulation is completely dry and free from gaps prior to application of jacketing material. • Inspect for proper overlap of metal jacketing. • Verify the application of sealant at the circumferential overlaps of metal jacketing on horizontal pipe. • Verify the proper distance of bands, screws and rivets as specified. • Ensure the moisture protection and weatherproofing at cutouts, protrusions and locations where moisture could enter the insulation are properly applied. • Check for good appearance of applied jacketing. Prior to start of insulation work, all the work activities and requirements as mentioned in Method Statement must be understood by the operatives. It is recommended that Method Statement must be explained by their respective supervisor / foreman to operatives. Sample of Risk Assessment form Microsoft Office d 97 - 2003 Docum Cape plc © 2010 71 Safety MSDS – Material Safety Data Sheets A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that contains information on the potential health effects of exposure to chemicals or other potentially dangerous substances and on safe working procedures users should adhere to when handling chemical products. • Material safety data sheets shall be present of all the material present on site which will indicate the manufacturer’s recommendation to take preventive measure and precautions for the safe use of materials to reduce personal exposure to hazardous dust and fibers. • All insulation materials must be labeled to identify that no asbestos is present. • The safety officer shall regularly conduct Tool box talks to communicate the safety requirements to the operatives.
