What is
Dermatographia?
Dermatographia means “skin writing.”
A condition where light scratching causes red, raised
lines on the skin.
It is a form of physical urticaria (hives).
Usually harmless, non-contagious, and temporary.
Causes and Triggers
Exact cause unknown in most cases
Common triggers include:
Skin pressure (scratching, rubbing)
Stress or anxiety
Infections (e.g., viral)
Allergic reactions
Certain medications (like penicillin)
Symptoms of
Dermatographia
Raised, red lines on the skin after scratching
Itching, burning, or stinging sensation
Reaction appears within minutes
Usually fades in 30 minutes to 1 hour
May recur multiple times a day
Prevention of
Dermatographia
Wear loose, soft clothing
Use gentle, fragrance-free soaps
Apply moisturizer regularly
Avoid hot showers and skin irritation
Use cold compresses for itch relief
