Merit Answer Guide

1. Explain the meaning of the following terms, and list at least one Scripture reference for each:
grace, repentance, faith, new birth, sanctification.
Many Scripture references could be used for each term. Following are some suggestions:
• Grace: The unmerited love and favor of God toward people. John 3:16; Romans 3:23;
Ephesians 2:4,5.
• Repentance: An inner change of heart, being sorry for our sins, and an outward turning from
sin and toward God. Acts 2:38; Romans 6:23.
• New Birth: The creative life-giving work of the Holy Spirit that makes a person spiritually alive,
a child of God. John 1:12; 3:3,7; 1 Peter 1:23.
• Faith: A trust in God that is followed by actions. Mark 16:16; Acts 8:13,21; James 2:19; 1 John 1:9.
• Sanctification: To be made free from sin and to be made holy. Hebrews 10:10,13,14; 1 John 1:7.
2. Explain in detail the steps in becoming a Christian and a person’s responsibilities after becoming
a Christian. Include such things as conduct, faithfulness, stewardship, and witnessing.
Steps in Becoming a Christian:
• Admit you have sinned. (Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23)
• Believe in Jesus. (John 1:12; Romans 6:23)
• Confess and leave your sin. (1 John 1:9; Revelation 3:20)
Our Responsibilities:
• Conduct: Continue to ask Jesus to make me more like Him. Make my relationship with Jesus
the most important thing in my life.
• Faithfulness: Pray and read the Bible each day and regularly attend church.
• Stewardship: Tithe (give ten percent) of my income, time, and energy.
• Witnessing: Live a consistent Christian life and tell others how Jesus came into my life and
changed me.
3. Learn one method of leading a person to Christ.
Refer to MLR 5 “Leading a Person to Christ” as an example of one method.
4. Personally lead a person to Christ. Continue to encourage the person by praying for and with him,
by reading the Bible with him, and by discussing problems with him.
Verify this, and contact a pastor or counselor to assist in the discipleship of the person.
5. Discuss with a pastor or deacon ways in which you can be of service to God and your church.
Then spend at least fifteen hours engaged in Christian service. These Christian service hours cannot be applied to the Bronze and Silver Medal Christian Service hour requirements.
Verify completion.
6. Make a list of opportunities in the field of full-time Christian service. Interview two individuals
engaged in full-time Christian service, such as a pastor, an evangelist, a missionary, or a chaplain.
After the interview submit a 300-word report, including answers to the following questions:
a. What training and education are needed?
b. What opportunities are available?
c. Is full-time Christian service satisfying and rewarding?
d. What sacrifices are necessary?
e. How did they receive their calling?

7. Interview a layman who is active in Christian service, and discuss with him how a person can
serve Christ and the church.

Preliminary Information
During this merit, the boys will be taught some
important biblical terms, the value and importance of the minister and layperson in the church,
and how to lead a person to the Savior.
While leading a person to Christ fulfills
Requirement 4, be sure the boys understand that
this is done through the leading of the Holy Spirit
and not for the fulfillment of a requirement and
the earning of an award. Encourage the boys to
ask God to lead them in discussions and by their
lifestyle to share Christ with others. Let them
know that by being ready to share the good news
and the Word of God with others, they can be
more easily used by God to lead someone to
Him.
It would be valuable for you to review detailed
information about leading a boy to the Savior
found in this guide and other Rangers resources.
Encourage the boys to bring their Bible each
week during this merit since they will be reading
and memorizing Scripture verses that will help
them to understand salvation and how to lead
someone to the Lord.
Lesson
John 3:16. Ask the boys which verse they
think is the most quoted verse of the Bible. Most
will say John 3:16. Recite the verse together with
them. Explain that during this merit they will
become very familiar with key verses that are
used in understanding our salvation and in leading others to the Lord.
Grace. Write the word grace on the chalk-
board. Let the boys work in groups of three or
four to look up John 3:16; Romans 3:23; and
Ephesians 2:4,5 in their Bibles. Have them read
the verses and then mark them with a highlighter.
Then ask them to decide on a brief definition of
grace based on what they’ve read. Have them
write their definition on the board. Discuss the

CHRISTIAN SERVICE MERIT LESSON 1
Requirement 1, for this discussion.
Explain that we deserve to be punished for the
sins we have committed. Sin separates us from
God, which means on our own we are not able to
be in His presence for eternity. Even though we
deserve punishment, God extends His love to us.
That is grace.
Give the boys a few minutes to write a definition of grace and a supporting Scripture verse in
their workbook.
Christian Service Interview. Let the boys
know that one of the Christian service interviews
with a minister will be done together in a meeting and that they will need to do the other interview on their own. Give each boy a copy of MLR
1 “Sample Letter” and a blank piece of paper. Let
him think about a person he would like to interview. Give him ideas, if necessary. Have him use
the letter as a guide for requesting an interview.
Christian Service. Requirement 5 tells the
boys to discuss with the pastor ways they can be
of service to God and the church. If you are
arranging to have the pastor in the third meeting,
the boys can ask him at that point for ways they
can serve. If not, you may have the boys write a
letter to the pastor asking for this information.
They can use MLR 1 “Sample Letter” for this
and modify it slightly.
Scripture Memory. Encourage the boys to
work together with a friend to memorize John
3:16 and Romans 3:23. Have one say the verse
while the other checks it against the Bible. Then
they switch roles until both can say the verses
confidently. Let each boy recite both verses to
you.

Preliminary Information
Encourage the boys to bring their Bible each
week during this merit since they will be reading
and memorizing Scripture verses that will help
them to understand salvation and how to lead
someone to the Lord.
During this meeting the boys will write a letter
asking a layman to the fourth meeting for a group
interview. You may want to make verbal arrangements with the layperson before the meeting and
let the letter formalize the interview.
Lesson
Repentance. Write the word repentance on
the chalkboard. Let the boys work in groups of
three or four to look up Acts 2:38 and Romans
6:23 in their Bibles. Have them read the verses
and then mark them with a highlighter. Then ask
them to decide on a brief definition of repentance based on what they’ve read. Have them
write their definitions on the board. Discuss the
definitions. Refer to the Merit Answer Guide,
Requirement 1, for this discussion.
Explain that repentance means to feel sorry for
what we have done and to change our behavior.
We turn around—180 degrees—and go the opposite direction. But we cannot do it on our own;
we need God’s help. Because of God’s free gift
of forgiveness, we decide to turn our back on
things in our lives that keep us away from God.
Give the boys a few minutes to write the definition of repentance and a supporting Scripture
verse in their workbook.
Layman Interview. Distribute copies of MLR
1 “Sample Letter,” and have the group write one
letter inviting a layman to the fourth meeting for
an interview. Have all the boys sign the letter.

Lesson
Layman Interview. Have the boys open to
MWS 3 “Layman Interview Form” in their workbook to record the layman’s responses to the
interview questions. Let the boys ask the questions one at a time, allowing the layman enough
time to respond. Additional questions may be
asked as time permits. Have all the boys thank
the layman for coming to the meeting.
Importance of Salvation. After the layman
has finished, and maybe while he is still in the
room, discuss the following questions with the
boys. Allow the boys to respond and then guide
the discussion based on the answers given below.
1. Why should we lead our friends to Christ?
(God has an abundant life for them here and
for all eternity. The alternative is to spend
eternity in hell, separated from God.)
2. How does the Holy Spirit help us when we
are leading a friend to Christ? (He gives us
the words to say. He convicts and converts.)
3. What Scripture references are good to
memorize and why? (John 1:12; Romans
3:23; Romans 6:23; 1 John 1:9; and
Revelation 3:20. Knowing these verses can
prepare us to be ready at any time to help a
friend see his need for Jesus.)
4. How can we make sure that we get to heaven? (We must admit we have sinned, believe
in Jesus, and confess and leave our sin.)
5. What is so bad about sin? (It leads to death
and eternal life without God.)
6. What is the gift that God has for us?
(Eternal life with Him.)
7. What must we do if we want God to forgive
us of our sins? (Confess our sins.)
8. What should you do if your friend doesn’t
want to receive Jesus as his Savior? (We
continue to be his friend and pray that he
will come to Jesus at some point.)
9. When do we receive eternal life?
(Immediately after we give our heart to
Jesus.)
10. What are some things you can do to encourage your friend who has just received
Jesus? (Invite him to Royal Rangers,
Sunday School, and church so that he can
grow in his new relationship. Encourage
him to pray and read the Bible.)

Preliminary Information
Duplicate a copy of MLR 5 “Leading a Person
to Christ” for each boy. Be sure the boys understand that the motive for leading someone to the
Lord is love, not fulfilling a requirement. God
loves us and sends us to spread the good news of
His love and new life.
Lesson
Becoming a Christian. Ask the boys three
steps for becoming a Christian. Refer to the
Merit Answer Guide, Requirement 2, for this discussion. Ask the boys which of the Scripture
verses they’ve been memorizing goes with each
point. Let them know they will be memorizing
Revelation 3:20 later in the meeting. Have them
write these steps and Scripture references in their
workbook for the first part of Requirement 2.
Leading a Friend to Christ. Distribute a copy
of MLR 5 “Leading a Person to Christ” to each
boy. Following the information provided there,
demonstrate with another adult how you would
lead a friend to Christ. Then have each boy work
with a partner to practice leading someone to
Christ. Give the boys about ten minutes. Let each
boy take a turn. Let the boys know that while a
conversation may not go exactly as practiced, the
purpose of this activity is to get the boys comfortable with talking about salvation. Have the
boys write this information in their workbook for
Requirement 3.
Responsibilities of the Christian. Discuss
with the boys the responsibilities we have after
becoming a new Christian. Refer to the Merit
Answer Guide, second part of Requirement 2, for
this discussion. Have the boys write their
responses in their workbook.
Sanctification. Write the term sanctification
on the chalkboard. Let the boys work in groups
of three or four to look up Hebrews 10:10,13,14
and 1 John 1:7 in their Bibles. Have them read
the verses and then mark them with a highlighter.

Explain that sanctification means to be made
free from sin and to be made holy. God not only
saves us from sin but makes us holy. As we develop a closer relationship with Jesus, we are also
being sanctified. Sanctification includes two
parts. The first part happens immediately when
we give our hearts to Jesus. God makes us holy,
or sanctifies us, instantly. Second, God continues
to work in us as we draw closer to Him. As we
read and study the Bible, pray, and fellowship
with other Christians, God sanctifies us.
Give the boys a few minutes to write a definition of sanctification and a supporting Scripture
verse in their workbook.

Leading a Person to Christ

When we lead someone to Christ, our responsibility is to present the Word of God to him, and the
Holy Spirit takes care of the rest. The Holy Spirit will convict him of his sin and convert him to be a
follower of Christ. Following are some areas you will want to cover in your conversation with your
friend. Let him dialogue with you, and don’t do all the talking.
When you talk to a friend about your relationship with God, you can let him know that God loves
him too. His Word says so: “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
On our own we are not good enough to come to God. The Bible (Romans 3:23) says, “All have
sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” I have sinned. You have sinned. What is so bad about sin?
Sin will lead us to death. In Romans 6:23 it says, “The wages of sin is death.” That means that the payment for sin is death, which means that we will spend eternity in hell and not heaven.
Later in the same verse God tells us that “the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
God has a gift for us. This gift from God is free. All we have to do is accept it.
In John 1:12 it says, “To all who received Him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right
to become children of God.” God says that everyone can receive this free gift. We, as sinners, can
believe that Jesus died for our sins and that He has a free gift of eternal life for us.
In 1 John 1:9 it says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and
purify us from all unrighteousness.” If we tell Jesus our sins, He will forgive our sins and make us
clean from all our sins. I have confessed my sins and been forgiven. I have received God’s free gift.
Jesus is standing at your heart’s door right now. The Bible says in Revelation 3:20, “Here I am! I
stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.” Jesus will
not force His way in, but He is knocking. Would you pray with me right now? Open your heart and let
Jesus come in. You will have this free gift of eternal life, which means that Jesus will be waiting for
you in heaven.
Pray something like this, “Dear Jesus, we thank You for speaking to our hearts through the Bible. I
thank You for my friend. He has heard You speaking to him. And now Jesus, he wants to open the doors
of his heart and invite You to come in. Hear him now as he prays, and bring him Your gift of eternal
life. Amen.”
I will help you pray and invite Jesus into your heart. I don’t want you to pray unless you truly want
Jesus and His free gift. If you really mean it and want Him to come into your heart and live within
you, just repeat after me as I pray.
Begin praying the sinner’s prayer. Use your own words similar to the following: “Dear Jesus (pause
for your friend to say those words), I have heard Your Word (pause). I know I’m a sinner (pause). And
I know I have wages coming (pause). And those wages (pause) are wages of death (pause) and separation from You (pause). Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner (pause). And forgive me of all my sins
(pause). Dear Jesus, if You forgive me and come into my heart (pause), I’ll serve You and live for You
(pause). Jesus, I mean this prayer with all my heart. Amen.”
Then pray a prayer of thanks to Jesus for coming into your friend’s heart.
Ask your friend, “What did Jesus do?” “Where is Jesus at this moment?” Jesus came into your heart
because He said He would in the Bible. It is not because of anything that you or I have done. When is
Jesus going to give you eternal life? Right now.
Ask your friend to attend Royal Rangers and Sunday School with you. You may want to give him a
Bible if he doesn’t have one, and read it together with him. Check with him to encourage him as he
begins his walk with Jesus. Tell your commander that your friend has accepted Jesus as Lord.
