What is
Angular Cheilitis?
Angular Cheilitis is a condition where the corners of
the mouth become red, swollen, and cracked.
It is caused by inflammation and can be painful or
irritating, especially while eating or talking.
The condition may affect one or both corners of the
mouth.
It is not contagious but can be persistent if the
underlying cause is not treated.
Causes of Angular
Cheilitis
Fungal or bacterial infection (like Candida or
Staph)
Vitamin deficiencies (B2, B12, iron)
Excess saliva from drooling or lip licking
Poorly fitting dentures or braces
Dry weather or cracked lips
Health issues like diabetes or weak immunity
Risk Factors of
Angular Cheilitis
Wearing dentures (especially ill-fitting)
Poor oral hygiene
Frequent lip licking or drooling
Nutritional deficiencies
Diabetes or weakened immunity
Cold or dry weather
Signs & Symptoms of
Angular Cheilitis
Redness and soreness at the mouth corners
Cracks or painful splits in the skin
Burning or itching sensation
Bleeding or crust formation
Discomfort while eating, talking, or opening the mouth
Prevention of
Angular Cheilitis
Keep mouth corners clean and dry
Avoid licking or biting lips
Use moisturizing lip balm regularly
Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins (especially B vitamins and
iron)
Ensure dentures fit well and maintain oral hygiene
Protect lips from cold and dry weather with a scarf or balm
