Everyone has the right to protest about issues that are near and dear to their heart but
on the other hand doing it peacefully without causing damage to property and putting
people’s safety at risk is not acceptable. Taking a balanced approach is important as
both sides acknowledge their reasoning behind their genuine environmental concerns
within the guardrails of the law. Establishing the difference between peaceful
demonstration and destructive actions while responding to accordingly to any level of
disruption. Having conversation and negotiation should be a priority, however, illegal
and destructive activities must be addressed and dealt with.
While the right to protest is protected under the constitution there must be a distinction
between doing it peacefully and lawful instead of unlawful and illegal actions. Even with
this right, it does not give latitude to actions that would endanger and bring harm to a
person or property. Authorities can support this right by creating designated spaces and
foster discussions that would lay out programs to address environmental concerns and
sustainability while maintaining safety. Authorities often respond harshly to protestors,
escalating situations. A new approach should treat individuals with respect and dignity
while adhering to the law. Striking this balance is crucial: protect the right to protest
while ensuring that public safety and the rule of law are not compromised.
